It's never been about the value, it's about the Kings already having two players being paid over $10M. With this trade the Kings have several players under contract for the next three years: Doughty ($11M), Kopitar ($10M), Eichel ($10M), Reinhart ($7M). Iafallo ($4M), Roy ($3.1M), Walker ($2.6M). Leaves 33.8M to pay: Petersen, Anderson, Vilardi, Andersson, JAD, Kempe, Athanasiou, Moore. On top of that you are still retaining on Carter, have Quicks contract for two years, and recapture on Phaneuf and Richards ongoing. It's too much cap for the Kings to handle.
