Cap Dumping to DET Guide

Created by: RedWings86
Team: 2021-22 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 14, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
DET
  1. Neal, James
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (EDM)
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
This trade is a guide for those looking to dump salary cap on the Wings (you know who you are). This trade is being based off of the prior trade with the NYR, that sent Staal and a 2021 2nd to DET for future considerations. One year of Staal at 5.7M cost a 2nd round pick! Neal has 2 years left of a similar cap hit, hence two 2nd rounders. If you’d rather a 2021 1st from EDM only, so be it.

Seeing as the wing already robbed Edmonton of two
2nds and a 4th kinda seems reasonable Detroit might lower the cost a bit and help an old I mean old buddy out.

Although I agree with the logic, I think an unspoken aspect is the actual buyout cost. It isn't AAV split, but remaining contract value (actual cost).

I get your POV, but EDM could just buyout Neal for $1.9M for 4 years.. much better than giving up 2 seconds or a first.

It would be, I just don’t see it happening after the AA trade. Plus Kenny has been holding onto their 1st’s of late.

That’s the route I would take if I’m EDM. Or retain salary and trade him to a team that will take him for a 3rd, 4th and/ or prospect.

Lol if only it would work that way

Imagine STL paying some good picks for Okposo because they absolutely stole ROR

a 2nd plus something small should get it done. looking at the forwards under contract the wings might be able to use neal.

The Wings should try to grab Samorukov from the Oilers for taking Neal and if they have the cap space just ride out Neal's contract.

Or we could just get the 13th OA for taking him...

I agree but I think he is just using Neal as an example.

Yup, I am sure he is. I agree with his POV and think it could work with guys from TB, for example.

I think a $6M cap hit for 1 season is right about where its reasonable to ask for a 1st rd pick depending on the pick is.

But Edmonton was compensated for those picks and I'm pretty sure most Edmonton fans were very excited when the trade was made and some Edmonton fans were rubbing in that they got AA.

I understand your view, but in the Staal deal, Yzerman pro ably was thinking he could not get any Free Agents to come to Detroit, so it was an insurance policy if he could not sign a defenseman in Free agency.

Staal was a fal player back plan and it turned out to work out well. In the case of Neal he does not bring the same thing that Staal brought and with our team improving, albeit slowly, I think Yzerman may have an easier time signing players.
