I wouldn't to do that trade as a Red Wing. Keep those young assets and spend the 10m on UFA(s) that you would have spend on Eichel. Maybe not spend 10m this season but soon.

My initial reaction is the Oilers do this in a heart beat but I'm having second thoughts......

    Hear me out.....

If Holland LTIR Neal and Neal accepts basically Neal is retired but still getting paid in full.

The Oilers actually get more money off the books because Neal's bonus money comes off as well. essentially the Oilers can now go over the CAP dependent on what the bonus money was.

Now, Neal might say I want to keep playing and then this trade happens.

I'm not sure Detroit plays Neal as a regular though and at Neal's age does he want to put his body through that ordeal to play 10 - 15 games?

Holland has a history of LTIR his players.

    I like the trade though.

You can’t put a player on LTIR unless he has a serious injury the NHL investigates every LTIR case, Neal doesn’t have a career or season ending injury so he can’t be put on LTIR

I challenge you to find out why Zetterberg went on LTIR is and please look up https://editorinleaf.com/2016/09/01/toronto-maple-leafs-robidas-island/ for a great read. If your back is bad, your back is bad.

Neal has been hurt for two years now.

Zetterberg had drop foot and a degenerative back condition. Here you go

There is a long history of fake injuries and investigations that lead nowhere. Datsyuk being the most egregious of them. On LTIR and had a successful 2nd career in the KHL.
