Seth Jones Deal and the rest

Description
Ok, so.... Really the big focus on this is the Jones trade. Try not to get too much into the other trades or the lines.

News came out today about what it would take to get Seth Jones. Us hawks fans weren't too crazy about the potential asking price. Here is the spin I would take on it....

Yes there is risk trading for Jones, and yes his season this year was awful, but in order to acquire a No.1 defense you must take some sort of risk. Let alone the fact that the Blue Jackets as a whole had a miserable season. I personally am fine with getting rid of Mitchell. I like bigger defensemen, and if you're gonna trade away a prospect that could (potentially) become a No.1 (I say this sarcastically), then you should go out and get a No.1.

As for Blue Jacket fans, I am sorry for your loss. And unfortunately because Seth Jones had such a bad season, mix that with the fact that he is asking to leave, I cannot give you Dach or Boqvist. If you persuade me a little more, I can maybe give you a 1st.

I want to hear from Hawks Fans, Jacket Fans, and even get an unbiased approach from other fans. Lemme know what y'all think!

Seth Jones wasn't bad *this* season. He's never been good at anything except being given a lot of minutes to gather points on.

On the other hand Mitchell looks mightily unimpressive as well. I don't think this trade moves the needle in any direction, ironcally.

If that is all it takes to move Jones then sure, but I would be very hesitent to pay much more as our problem on D exists on the left side not the right side. Murphy, BoQ, Mitchell and Regula are all going to play good roles on the right....we are covered there. The left side is a disaster with asking Keith to still play top pair minutes, relying on Zadarov for anything more then a 3rd line role, and putting weight on Kalynuk, Stillman or Beaudin to jump into a 2nd line role. Acquiring a top line lefty, moving Keith to 2nd line, trading Zadarov opens a lot more doors for this unit to be a better defensive team then to pick up jones. We have trade assets including, Strome, Zadarov, one of Beaudin or Kalynuk, and a 1st round pick and plenty of cap to find us a top line lefty; that should be the focus.

Right handed players can play on the left side. Murphy did it before, and Boqvist has the skill to do it. That being if you really think Regula is going to be something. Even after his ROUGH season in Rockford.

They can play on the left. Murphy shouldn't. His played declined being on the left. If Boqvist isn't part of the trade...he actually played a little LD in London when Bouchard was there too.

A second pick is fair value for Strome. The Caps should spend all their cap space just keeping Ovechkin, though. What does that value look like in terms of player for player?

Yeah this ain’t it for Jones. People see him as a top 5 d in the league. It’s gonna be somewhat similar to the reported asking price. A first rounder, a high end prospect and a second. (Mark lazerus reporting).

That's what it should be. I won't argue against that. However he's coming off a bad year. For the analytic people, he's coming off of bad years. And he's also stating that he wants to leave. I could see a team fleecing Columbus, as their hands seem pretty tied at this point.

Yeah I kind of had a feeling this would come up. The hawks are pretty crowded in a lot of areas right now, and I think the best thing for them right now is to acquire picks for Strome. Perhaps they could retain some of the cap.

With this many teams in on Jones, there’s no shot this offer isn’t obtainable. The analytics people won’t trade for him and the old school guys will. I think the jackets are gonna supprise people for a rental player. When was the last time a rental like this was moved? Karlsson? And the only reason that was a so so offer was Ottawa wasn’t sending him to the East. They eliminated half the market.

Kekalainen has a pretty solid track record w/r/t not losing these sorts of trades.

I don't know, he's a rental that is asking to leave. His trade value is only going to get worse through the season.

And Johansen was a malcontent who was dragging down the locker room. And PLD was the same only worse as he'd actually demanded a trade.

We've heard it many times before.

So you're saying they're gonna get another player who is just going to leave in 3 years.

Im sorry I can't move past the Suter trade and how unvalued that is for him. I agree with @ChiHawk that our main problems are on the left side of defence and I for one don't want to be giving up Boq++ for Jones. I could handle doing this deal but as stated by other users, this is likely not going to be enough to obtain Jones with the amount of teams in the market for a RD.

Where would you put Suter in this lineup?
