Initial Creation Date: Jun. 29, 2021
Published: Jun. 29, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Strange way of staggering contracts, but only way to fit it under the cap. Hopefully cap goes up after this year and moving forward so we can pay our defenseman. Some of these lines are dreams like the Laf-Chytil-Kakko line and the Raty-Barron-Kravtsov line.

More of a intermediary deal till we’ve got more cap flexibility to lock him up for 8 once the cap goes up.

This deal takes fox directly to UFA without buying out any UFA years. The rangers aren’t doing that.

Well there’s no other way to do it under a flat cap unless we go 3 year bridge and then 8 year contract.

You mean the way every team always does it? Ya. That’s the way to do it. The last guy to get the “straight to UFA without buying out UFA years off your ELC,” deal was hjarmalsson i believe, and wasn’t that one of the guys that had their QO faxed in late so there was a chance they could hit UFA? It was a long long time ago.

Well I’m not of the belief someone should get $10 mil plus off an entry level contract right away. I personally think guys need to win to get paid. The bs that goes on in the league now is why so many teams can’t contend cause they’ve got no cap to build a deep team.

I don’t see why you’re opposed to a bridge deal….

Many teams use a 5 year intermediate deal. Pens did it, Hawks did it, even Tampa has used them. If you just pay guys right away then you’re cap is screwed.

I don’t really see Detroit pursuing Trouba with Hronek & Seider as the foreseeable top 4 RD in Detroit.

Im guessing Fox wants to stay long term with the Rangers so he wouldn't want a bridge deal

If there’s no deal to be made, he gets bought out, same with Kreider.

I’d give him 8 years if we had more cap flexibility, but that’s not a thing that exists for us at the moment.

So what?
What would the rangers rather, three years and RFA rights, or four years and no rights over the player?

That’s not a bridge. And that buys out a year of UFA. This does not.

That fourth years gives us a lot of flexibility to lock him up instead of trying to figure out even more tough decisions the year before.

And takes away the rights to Fox. There’s a reason that just does not happen in the NHL off a players entry deal.

Unless I’m mistaken yes it does, Fox is 23 already by the time his next contract goes into effect he’d be 24-25, thus a 5 year deal takes him to 29-30. People become ufa at 27.

Ahhhh yes, i forgot that he went into the league a bit older than most, so the seven years doesn’t apply. Still, it’s pretty asset management. The negotiations with Adam fox in his prime threatening to hit the open market is a scary thought. If the cap has gone up by then, and he keeps this up, 8x15 is probably on the table. Then the rangers are stuck paying a guy a huge amount into their late 30s.

I guess that is kind of what the rangers do though.

Unless we drop Mika and Buch, there’s no other way to do this. That’s already considering retaining a significant amount of money for Kreider and Trouba or buying them both out. Flat cap has our backs against the wall.

Or…..just bridge him at a reasonable amount, and negotiate with a 26 year old who’s an RFA.

They both have NMCs so they’d need to waive to buyout his contract. Trouba would just need to make like 10M for the duration of his remaining contract to break even so I could see it but that’s quite a bit of dead cap for the foreseeable future.

That will be at least 2 seasons before the cap goes up. I'd lock him up if it was my decision.

3 years. I agree with you on that.

But I think he would want long term deal (8 years) over 3 or 4

Caps gotta go one way or another. If we can’t trade them, a buyout is our only option.

This is 23-24 I think the cap would go up by 27-28.
