Sorry but I do not think Chicago has much say in the matter at the point at which Keith asked for a trade to Western Canada. Who is going to eat that cap hit?
I think "cap hit" is really the issue. Salary would only matter if Daryl Katz was broke and it mattered. Edmonton is a very lucrative team. 2nd Pairing in Edmonton does not matter much because Darnell Nurse is a minute horse. Keith would play less than 18 minutes a night on the second pairing on this team.
I'm just one person, but I do believe the Hawks have ALOT of options. Let's say Duncan Keith goes ballistic. He won't because that's not who he is, but let's pretend. What does Stan do?
Keith: Stan, I'm a 3x Cup Winner, 2x Norris Winner, and Conn Smythe Winner. I've paid my dues...send me where I want to go.
Bowman: Get in line Duncan. I've got 3 of those on this team...except I see your Norris and raise you a Hart. The other two want to be here and I owe it to those two to create the best possible team I can.
Keith: ok, where do we go from here. I still want to go to the Pac NW.
Bowman: Here are the options as I see them. A.) You get your agent to work on Holland. I've done what I can. The Blackhawks as an organization don't exist to help out the Oilers. B.) While your agent is doing that...you waive your NMC to go to Seattle. If you really just want to get closer to your kids...you'll waive. C.) You play for the Blackhawks. We want to keep you and have you retire as a Blackhawk. I understnad this doesn't get you closer to the Pac NW, but at least we want you. D.) Don't show up anymore. This is NOT our preferred option, but we'll terminate your contract like STL did with Patrick Berglund and you can go the Pac NW.
