I picked up an interesting tid bit in the NHL article regarding the Wild’s first round last night. Apparently SJS was in on getting 26 OA but they said whatever SJS was offering wasn’t good enough. SJS didn’t have a 2nd and they aren’t gonna be that good next year, which makes me think a player was involved.

I don’t think we move a 1st for Hertl. This is just me reading into a sentence from an article though.

Now let me offer my 2 cents that I’ve probably said many a time. Love Dvorak here. Locks down the most important forward position through the years we need value. Hertl is fun but I’m not giving up any real quality for him since he will be a pure rental (we just cannot afford him unless we move Fiala). And even then I’d assume he’s a rental. It also sure looks like Cole is hitting the market but I’m fine with the price you got here.

I’m currently curious about 2 guys though. Henrique and Pettersson are 2 guys I’m really really interested in. Is Henrique at 3 mil a poison pill? He can play top 6 until Rossi is ready the go to the wing or bottom 6 (I view Wennberg as very similar here). Pettersson is a noted performer, is in his prime, and PIT apparently wants to move him. Can you get PIT to eat a mil or can we fit 4 mil for 4 more years for a top 4 guy? I also like McCabe regardless of signing Cole or trading for Pettersson.

Greenway should very much be a no go in any trade for Hertl, you'd have to trade Boldy.

You're not getting Boldy for just one year of Hertl. Hertl is a rental. Nuff said.

Sharks aren’t moving hertl. And 26th overall in a weak draft isn’t nearly good enough for him. I’m willing to bet it was Labanc cause you could make an argument he isn’t worth that much. Not the case with Hertl.

2C, be realistic. And if he had at least 2-3 more years of control left on his contract he might be worth Boldy. If he came with retention.

Otherwise, he's not worth a Top 50 prospect of Boldy's caliber with just a single year left on his current contract. Don't be silly.

Khusnutdinov or Khovanov? Sure, maybe. Rossi, Boldy, Addison/Lambos and Wallstedt, are, and would be off the table.

Meier and LeBanc don’t make sense for the Wild. I’m also not saying it was only 26 OA but I am saying they were discussing Hertl and 26 OA was involved.

I don't think there are any big trades left in MN this offseason. They don't have the extra draft assets anymore and can't afford to make anymore holes in their lineup.

I like the McCabe signing, but that is a 1 year prove it deal, not a 3 year contract money. Foligno is fun to think about, but I think he'll get better offers. I think if Cole was going to re-sign it would have been done by now.

That’s fair. I misinterpreted what you were saying. I agree Meier and/or Labanc would be weird for the Wild to go after.

I get the argument you’re making, but Hertl is very easily a 1C.

I want the wild to stay away from Dvorak. He’s another victor rask. Gets points by playing with better talent - hall and then garland. He would not be an upgrade, just the wild signing up for another rask.

I am just genuinely curious, if hertl is moved, what do you think is proper value for him?

This off-season? It will be very high value. A prospect like Boldy and a late first. That’s because he just won’t be dealt, he’s the sharks best player and has shown willingness to stay in SJ. To get him our socks need to be blown off.

Now say it’s the TDL and Hertl doesn’t want to stay or wants too much, then you look for a mark stone style trade and sign for a first and a prospect not as good as Boldy probably.

Listen, I may be primarily a Wild fan, but I've been a Penguins and Sharks fan since the 90's. Lemieux and that Pens team got me into hockey when I was a kid, and I have followed the Sharks since they came into the league.

So I get it, I really do. But he really isn't one. The Sharks haven't had a legitimate 1C since Pavelski left. Hertl for as good as he is, he's a middle-rung 2C. Just like Mikko Koivu was for the Wild. They're more than capable of handling top line center duties, but really should be on the 2nd line on a cup contending team.

As a Sharks fan, I love Hertl, but he isn't what you're trying to make him out to be. He's not a 1st line center, at least not a true legitimate one. He can handle the role, but it's not ideal, and he would only hold down the spot until Rossi is ready to take it over.

If Koivu was the same age as Hertl is now, and had 1 year left on his contract, would you trade a prospect of Boldy's caliber for him? I wouldn't, and Koivu is my favorite Wild player of all time.

I got interested so I did some research here. When Koivu was 28 in 2011-2012 he had a WAR of 0.34. For reference, Joe Thornton had one of 3.05.

This year, Hertl had a war of 2.11, placing him easily in the top 50 NHL players. The only wild player who was near Hertl was Kaprizov, who was third in the league and a total monster.

So Hertl would be your second best player, and is better than the best center you guys have had in the last 20 years. Hes legitimately a first line Center and you trade Boldy for him any day

Greenway, one of Beckman/Khusnutdinov/Khovanov, and a 2022 2nd. Possibly more if they would be willing to take Rask in the deal as well.

Not really. You don’t trade guys like Hertl for quantity. Imagine Kaprisov was a UFA in 3 years, but might resign with you. You wouldn’t deal him for anything but a haul

What site did you use to find out the WAR stats? Because I wasn't able to find anything with a quick Google search.

I used Patrick bacons model. Obviously public stuff isn’t perfect but Hertl is totally underrated by counting stats

I posted another ACGM idea up, I’d love to hear both of your guys feedback and if I’m any closer to a proper value. This is of course with the condition that hertl is able to be traded and not off the market which he could well be

@RazWild I’ll vouch for the model here, it’s behind a paywall. Hertl grades out nicely and has great defensive impacts in addition to his counting stats. Whether you want to hash put 1C or 2C, that’s not something I have time for any more.

But I do agree with @RazWild that any multi piece package for Hertl will not have a 1st. He’s a rental. Reinhart, who has similar impacts, went for a 1st and good prospect with exclusive rights to his next contract meaning the team still has a *tiny* bit of leverage. Hertl gets less than that because he is a rental until SJS signs him longer term.
