Should Get Past 1st Round

Created by: BallPuckFellow10
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2021
Published: Aug. 12, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The two top lines on this team should be very good and have the ability to score every night. The third line would be the key to this team. That line would have the shutdown ability we have missed. They are all penalty killers as well which is great. The fourth line could be deployed as another scoring line with either Matthews and Tavares taking turns when Spezza is tired. On b2b games Brooks could fill in for Spezza and Simmonds could move in and take Bunting's spot if he isn't performing or even Kase. Our defense would arguable be weakened by replacing Dermott with Liljegren, but I feel as if it is his time to prove himself. At the TDL we could look at someone like Bortuzzo from STL at 50% retained if they are out of the playoff picture. Other Targets could be Benning from NSH, Luybushkin from AZ, Braun from PHI, van Riemsdyk from WSH, Whitecloud or Coghlan from VGK if they become available at some point. All would be 50% retained as well.

What are your thoughts?
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Appleton, Mason ($450,000 retained)
SEA
  1. Engvall, Pierre
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Before people say this is so unrealistic omg blah blah blah. Look at the current situation the Kraken have.

Gourde and Wennberg are likely going to be their #1 and #2 up the middle. After that there is a question mark on who their third line center is going to be. It could be, McCann, Johansson, Järnkrok or Blackwell. Their Top 9 wingers would likely be Eberle, Schwartz, Donskoi, Tanev, Appleton and whoever doesn't play center of McCann, Johansson, Järnkrok and Blackwell. This means that if Seattle were to lose Appleton, it wouldn't really hurt their depth. He could be moved if the price is right. I think if the Leafs offered a 2nd round pick as well as a bottom 6 forward to round out their forward group, Seattle might very well bite.

Another thing I thought about that might just be me overthinking but anyways. Appleton was not present at the unveiling of the roster. Something that maybe could suggest that he would be someone that they could imagine flipping for a pick. It is just a thought and it could very easily be that he wasn't available to be there in person. I am very aware of other players not being present either that might have a big impact on the Krakens roster. It was just something I thought about and that I wanted to mention.
2.
TOR
  1. 2022 3rd round pick (NYI)
  2. 2022 6th round pick (NYI)
NYI
  1. Dermott, Travis
Additional Details:
Could be traded anywhere. I just thought the Islanders could be a fit as Dermott is a solid puck moving defenseman, something they lost when moving Leddy. They could even add another left sided defenseman in addition to Dermott and have Andy Greene as a solid depth option.

Arizona has a hole as well that Dermott could fit and I am sure there would be another team in the league interested if Dermott came available.

Why not? How much more would it take to get it done? I mean, I think a 2nd round pick for Appleton would be very fair value.

If I were them I’d keep Appleton. I get there’s a 2nd but they’re replacing engvall with Appleton essentially. I’d rather have Appleton. He’s better and cheaper, and a better overall fit.

Yeah, but he would likely need a pay rise next season and with the options they already have, I can't see Appleton being a major loss for them. Engvall is obviously the lesser player in the deal, but a 2nd round pick is still a good piece for Seattle to build with for the future.

I think the Leafs listen to every single offer on their players. Dermott could be expandable if Liljegren becomes an NHL regular. For the Leafs, having someone with his cap hit as a healthy scratch isn't ideal. Would be better to move him on for some picks.

Or have 7 NHL quality defenceman to handle the inevitability of injuries. But two years ago when 3 of the top 4 where hurt we got to enjoy the wonders of Marincin and I guess we miss that **** show.

What has Appleton done to deserve such a return or faith that he's some hero. He's 25 and has had 1 decent season and two others where he was a bottom 6 player. This looks like the usual, anyone from other team must be better than our depth situation.

Clearly never watched Appleton play. If you would, you wouldn't comment something this ignorant.

Biega, Dahlström and Menell are depth. Someone else could be added if they became available as well.

He was part of that nightmare 3rd line in WPG with Copp-Lowry-Appleton. Engvall was also part of a nightmare 3rd line in the playoffs with Mikheyev and Simmonds (in the other sense)

Boy did Winnipeg ever turn heads in the playoffs! Beating a really bad Oilers team and getting swept by Montreal. Better spend massive amount on any other teams 3rd liners.

I mean they lost Schiefle for being dumb. Iunno if they could move Engvall and a pick for someone like Appleton they probably would've done it already. Engvall, maybe because of the way Keefe utilizes him, or maybe his linemates, but he just doesn't move the needle. He either scores on the rush or he's invisible. He's a fringe NHLer on the leafs and a fringe NHLer that makes 1.25 isn't great. Maybe if he bounces back with some consistent PK time and drives the line he's on they could get more value for him

Would you say the same about Tampa when they acquired Barclay Goodrow for a 1st and Coleman for a first and Nolan Foote? Bogosian was nothing in Buffalo. They made him relevant again. It is possible to build a winning team from acquiring depth pieces from other teams. Your argument is so flawed.

I don't think it is that unrealistic. He could play a similar role for the Kraken while they would have plenty of options still in their top 9. A 2nd round pick would be a good return for them.

Leafs added 4 other forwards and a goalie, not just Appleton. Ignorant comment.

Appelton is a useable middle six right winger

Engvall not really an NHL caliber player
