But Ken Holland might. He gave up assets for Duncan Keith with no retention and then lost Larsson cause he had to use the protection on Keith.

Their budget for tender for 22-23 is like 2 million not 10.

Larsson left b/c he wanted to go, not b/c he wasn’t protected. Caleb Jones is at best a 6/7 and was expected to possibly be lost in the expansion draft before the trade so using nothing to get something.

Edm needs a goalie, but not that goalie.

Still a cap dump. $5M x 5 years for a guy who can't even post average numbers? Cap dump.

Keith is a negative asset IMO. Super overpaid and one of the worst in the league defensively according to analytics.

I think I'd rather have Neal than Keith.

If Larsson was protected he wouldn't have talked to Seattle and wouldn't have known what was out there. He was strongly considering staying in Edmonton.

Edmonton didnt lose Larsson in expansion he was gone before then. Holland granted him permission to talk to other teams he wanted a change of scenery.

Ken holland beat Larsson's current contract by a year and ken holland also granted Larsson permission to talk to other teams so he could make up his mind and edmonton could make a plan before free agency.

    That's hilarious.

Keith, even at 38, will have a better upcoming season than Larsson will.

If that's true that's another example of mismanagement. I've disliked almost every move Ken Holland has made this offseason after signing Nuge to a team friendly deal.

Trading for Kieth, buying out Neal, giving Ceci a 4 year deal at over 3M per season, giving Hyman 5.5M on a 7 year deal, giving up Bear (a top 4 D man) for a middle 6 winger.

If you are going to lose a guy you'd like to know before free agency so you can get a replacement.

Do we want a good regular season Team or a Playoff team? Bear was played in front of Bouchard last year that can't happen. How do you make sure it never happens again? Trade him. Don't forget Bear also had significant concussion issues with the last being his 4th and he was very poor at net front defending. That is how teams get beat and where most goals especially in the playoffs get scored.

How does signing Barrie and Ceci or trading for Keith address net front defending?

If he was saving the cap space to sign Hamilton or Grubauer or wanting to trade for DeMelo or Dillon and needed cap space then it would make some kind of sense. Instead he hands out a 9.25Mx8 contract to Nurse and trades for 38 year old Keith who is on the back end of a 13 year contract signed to keep the cap hit down for his prime years.

Darnell nurse was a number 1 defence last year legitimately. He can play the body in front of the net and where else do you find a top pairing Dman who can play those minutes and not get hurt all season long? Barrie was obviously the better offensive defense and he took a team friendly deal. Ceci is absolutely better at net front simple fact being he cant get bowled over because hes a bigger body. Edmonton is missing veteran presence and the reason being was they never payed anybody before when they got good so they always left. Keith can still skate and he still has 3 stanley cup rings, he's still a competitive guy, and he makes it hard for other teams to cleanly enter the zone.

I don't think you get it. They filled some holes and brought in some culture for very few assets and now the coaching staff, who are excellent defensive coaches, will use their systems to make them good defensively. Duncan keith is not a silver bullet but he will provide a lot of what they need until Broberg, Bouchard and Samorukov grow into those roles. You can't just bring in perfect defense you have to draft and develop them.
