leafs 2022 deadline

Created by: FANTEIGE
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 6, 2021
Published: Oct. 8, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
at the beginning:
Ritchie - Matthews - Marner
Kerfoot - Tavares - Nylander
Bunting - Kampf - Mikheyev
Simmonds - Spezza - Kase

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin - Dermott

Campbell
Mrazek

Nicholas Robertson starts the season in the AHL, gets time in the middle of the season, but as we push for the playoffs, we send him back down to the AHL to get more time and have a better and more experienced player getting ready for playoff time.

For the Mikheyev trade, he wanted out due to ice time, so what better place for ice time than the Buffalo Sabres. We got back a 2021 3rd round pick (Sardarian), a 2021 6th round pick (von Barnekow Løfberg) and a 2024 7th round pick, which I believe is around, or maybe a bit over, Mikheyev's value. Along with that, my sources are saying that Kyle Dubas is a big fan of the name William von Barnekow Løfberg, prompting him to make that move. (Last part is still speculation)

For the Forsberg trade, if there was 2+ years left on Forsberg's deal, he would go for a lot more than that. For just a playoff push, we paid too much, however, we had to. If we wanted them to retain salary, that bumps his value way up, which caused this overpayment. Forsberg is exactly what the Leafs need, a left winger.

The Motte trade is just a small move to try and get tougher. In the 2020 playoff bubble, I was personally very impressed with Motte's play, and feel he would be a good fit on the Leafs. However, he did push Simmonds out of the lineup, but I just wanted to make another trade, also I feel Motte is a better player at this moment than Simmonds, however, you could make a case either way.

Lastly, the Stecher for Dermott trade. Dermott is just simply not breaking through with the Leafs and made some costly defensive mistakes last year vs. the Habs. Stecher is a more experienced defenceman and also, he's meant to play on the right side. Even with the season Stecher had last year, I feel Dermott has more value due to him being a little younger and having a lower cap hit. Givani Smith just adds to our toughness. Also, we give up Kokkonen to make Detroit retain 50k on Stecher for salary cap purposes.

Lastly, please ignore our new signed player on the taxi squad, Mr. One Dollar

No chance NSH even considers that offer -- nowhere close honestly. You say that it's an "overpayment" in your description, but it's a heavy underpayment. Sure, he's a UFA -- but he'll still get a much better return than this if he's ultimately traded.

personally, 3 2nd round picks and 2 middle six guys is pretty good for a rental. You're right though, they'll probably get better offer elsewhere

A 3rd for Stecher and I doubt Detroit trades Smith for Kokkonen. If Detroit wanted to trade Smith for an unproven LHD they would've protected Cholowski and left Lindstrom unprotected.

BUF really doesn't seem like a team that's going to be giving up futures for a UFA at the deadline. If a different team was interested in Mikheyev though, I think a 5th or maybe a 4th would be a more reasonable return. The equivalent of a 3rd, 6th & 7th is way too much for a 4th line rental.

It's weird that you think you're overpaying for Forsberg here, as that offer wouldn't come close to getting it done. Even without retention, NSH would be looking for a 1st plus one or more pretty good secondary pieces. Two 2nds, a C prospect, and a couple guys that seem unlikely to get qualifying offers from NSH isn't going to seal the deal.

Givani Smith can’t be a throw-in for a trade like that, in what’s essentially a swap of 3rd pairing D-men. He’s got about as much value as either Dermott or Stecher, and the fact I haven’t heard of Kokkonen until now doesn’t make me think he would move the needle. A simple swap of Dermott and Stecher is a more likely trade scenario.

Why would buffalo trade anything for a pending UFA?

I don't see three 2nds in that return either.

Personally I see
2 - 2nd round picks neither of which are next draft

A recent 5th round pick with little chance of ever becoming a nhl player

Kase - a perpetually injured player who can be a middle 6 IF (and that’s a big if) he’s healthy

Engvall is a bottom 6

Nashville would be better off getting a 1st round pick in the next draft and whatever else they can. Neither of the players offered are worth pushing out any of our current prospects.

it's exactly what im offering. 2 actual 2nd's, a 2021 draftee (2nd round), ondrej kase and pierre engvall (two solid depth players)

EDIT: I MEANT TO OFFER KNIES, NOT VOIT

Vancouver won't be sellers at the deadline but if they were you wouldn't get Motte for a 5th and a prospect. He's exactly the kind of player teams need in the playoffs and worth al least a 3rd.

Even still, it's quantity over quality. No picks in 2022 hurts the value, Engvall and Kase don't really add anything, NSH isn't getting compensated for the retained salary. Other teams can and will beat this at the deadline.

Sabres aren't trading Barnekow and Sardarian and a 7th for Mikheyev (who'd they lose as a FA)
