I do agree with that, if Fleury is having a down year might not be worth the price to upgrade from Koskinen for only one playoff run.
I think Gibson would be the best goalie potentially available at the moment but for a team with Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, Bouchard, Holloway, and Broberg all likely needing pay raises in the future, maybe the 6.4 mil could be spent elsewhere
I would have been all over a Fleury for Koski swap in the summer. But clearly moving franchises at his age has had an impact on is play, and thats not overly surprising. Fluery was with the Penguins for so long and the writing was on the wall that he was on his way to Vegas. He could prepare for that. After a pretty sudden move to Chicago, he's looked pretty of more games than not this year. There is reason to expect a mid-season move would be similar. And at this point, the Oilers have zero complaints with Koskinen. No questions that Koski/Smith aren't long term solutions (hell not even solutions for next season), but neither is Fleury, so no reason to make the deal.
I was interested in Korpi like 5-6 years ago. SInce then, he has had stretches of strong play, but he stats are not at all enticing of moving a 1st rounder for. As has already been mentioned, he and Koski have been pretty comparable over the last few seasons, which Koski taking the tops in several categories. I would argue the only reason that there is any traction in a deal like this is because the "vocal minority" Oilers fans have been a lot louder on hating on Koskinen than fans are in the smaller market Columbus. Statistically, this deal is just not an upgrade and the way Korpi has been trending, not much reason to suggest he's a long-term solution.
That brings us to Gibson. No doubt this deal is steep, and ideally I'd like to shed one of Samorukov or the 2nd, but I without a doubt would be targeting him. Duck fans understandably don't want to move him, no less to a divisional rival, but trying to be as objective as possible, I honestly believe that his prime years are just not aligned at all with the Ducks next competitive window. In saying that, I also understand the value in still having some good players on a lottery team to maintain a good culture, but at the same time, it will be guys the Zegras and Drysdale who will shape the team down the line. I know its easy to say hypothetically, but if I were a Ducks fan I would absolutely try to load up on young talent and assets. Give yourself the best chance when your window opens 4-5 years down the line. Just my thoughts
