I agree but I don’t think they’ll play one a lot more than the other

I check the games, one is playing for a contender the other with a bottom 3 team. Allen is MILES better than Smith I can guarantee that

Bro what? Smith was a top 7 goalie last year, Allen isn't even that good. He's a good backup at best.

Probably for the best from the Oilers perspective.

Also, Wideman was atrocious when he played for us previously, don't think there's any appetite in bringing him back.

tears of joy

This just reaffirms my position that Habs fans are the worst in the league at player evaluations.

Thanks, I guess?

idk man. mike smith was insane against the jets last year. he singlehandedly won you games in the playoffs. oh wait, no he didn't. you got swept.
but sure mike smith is amazing dude. top 5 goalie in the league. should win the vezina this year.

So if they have a Vezina in Smith, a Norris in Nurse and McDavid & Draisaitl, why don’t they have a Cup right now ?

Completely different situations. Wideman was a short lived failed attempt to get a journeyman defenseman to fill a hole. Wasn't a good fit then, wouldn't be a good fit now.

Petry was an OIlers draft pick. As was par for the course back then, they rushed development of a good young player to the point where they had no confidence because of lack of organizational depth and had to trade for pennies on the dollar. Schultz and Dubnyk are other good examples of the management at the time screwing up talented players to the point of being reclamation projects before they found their footing elsewhere. Holland era has been far from perfect but the difference in patience with the prospects is a notable difference. I would assume Petry was scarred enough from back then that he wouldn't want to come back though.

It's not the NBA, can't single handedly win based on the play of a few stars. Been the Oilers issue for years... the team bleeds goals when McDavid/Draisaitl are off the ice.

I don't think anyone is calling for Smith to win a Vezina, but 7th in voting last year would say he's not a garbage goalie that Allen is 10000X better than. He looked good this year for the couple games he played prior to his injury. Smith was average in the playoffs last year, issue was there was an actual recent Vezina goaltender at the other end that saved roughly 2 goals above expected per game in that series and then inexplicably fell off a cliff with the rest of the Jets the next series. If you put Allen in net for Edmonton that series, the result is likely the same.

I know the result would be the same, but Habs were built for the playoffs and Price was doing Price ****. But Allen is a better goalie than Smith and I watched a lot from both

The way I'd compare Smith vs Allen is Smith has higher peaks and lower valleys in his performance than Allen. Smith is more likely to go beast mode and just be a brick wall for a stretch but also more likely to just cost the team the game. If you look small sample size over Smith's couple games this year plus last year, he has better stats than Allen over the short term but if you look at 3-5 year averages Allen has the better stats.

The biggest difference between the Habs and the Oilers is depth. Habs for their run were getting contributions up and down the line-up. The Oilers outscore the opponents with McD/Drai on the ice and then give it all back when they're on the bench.

Fair enough, but Allen can’t have good stats with MTL
It’s literally impossible, we allowed 40+ shots and there’s like 5+ grade A chance per game. It’s ridiculous
