Most Id Pay For Klingberg

Created by: CoopsTroops
Team: 2021-22 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 9, 2022
Published: Jan. 9, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Klingberg would only be a 1 year rental, so this is the most I'd offer. No additional first or Thompson.

I'd prefer not to trade for him, but JBB has proven himself as a big-ticket TDL buyer.

JBB has also shown he doesn't trade current roster players away at the TDL

I wouldn't trade both Rutta and Foote. Tampa won't be able to re-sign Klingberg, so gutting the future of the right side is a short sighted move. I'd offer Rutta, 1st+ one of the top D prospects that Tampa has(Schmidt or Thompson perhaps), and then an additional 3rd or 4th for the 25% retention to make it work, but that's about it. Tampa's window isn't closed after this year, so there's no reason to really go that "all in" with this move.

I wouldn't consider this an all in move.

We are accustomed to never having our current season's first round pick after the trade deadline, I still have my reservations about Foote ever developing into anything more than a third pairing defender, and there's no guarantee Rutta returns next year to begin with.

We'd do just fine with Cernak, Bogosian, and Sustr as our right-side defenders until another TDL add next season. Rutta and Foote will not be make-it-or-break-it options for the team.

I wouldn't trade Thompson under any circumstance. He's the closest thing we have to a Makar or Fox in our prospect pool at defense. Probably will never top out at their level, but his offensive talent is legit.

Any team that has to rely on Sustr as a top 6 regular is in bad shape. Furthermore, the defense never stays healthy all year, so then they are in even worse trouble next year when that inevitably happens. Foote has improved but is still iffy on whether he will make a top 4 role, but his cost controlled status makes him more valuable to the team. I could see Foote as part of a trade for a defensive upgrade, but not for a rental they have no hope of keeping.

We don't get defensive upgrades with our cap situation. It's gets by with the left side and Cernak, and then drop a bunch of assets at the TDL on a double retention want/need.

They could easily get a real RD upgrade if they moved Foote+other assets, but if they did thos trade thwy would be awful on the right side next year, just awful. Bogo always misses time, Sustr is one of the worst defenseman this team has ever had the misfortune of icing, so that leaves one real RD next year. By '23-'24, hopefully Thompson is ready and the team possibly re-signs Rutta, but if they are going for a rental UFA, there are cheaper options that will still serve Tampa's needs.

No need to make this trade not to mention it’s a big overpay for a player that’s gonna be gone after playoffs
