I just don't see edmonton going with varlamov because its another year at $5mil which would tempure any attempts at getting a longer-term solution until the end of 22-23 season. I feel edmonton will grab a rental to make a push to show mcdrai and then go super aggressive to find a LT goalie solution in the offseason

Salo is a young prospect but understood, I'm semi-lowballing here.

Sign Greiss next year and have a Varlamov-Greiss tandem. Worked out well before smile

In the past I've liked the idea of Edmonton acquiring Varlamov, but at this point I don't think it makes sense for the Oilers. Last summer, Ken Holland committed two seasons to Mike Smith, and his injuries have forced the Oilers to have a close look at Stuart Skinner's development. For his part, the rookie has played well, despite a lackluster record. Smith began to show signs of a return to form, even though the Oilers remain in a funk after he came of LTIR. I think Edmonton feels they may have good goaltending if Smith remains healthy and Skinner is recalled after his current stint in Bakersfield. They might decide to assign Koskinen to Bakersfield, or figure out how to leverage the taxi squad in order to carry three goaltenders. Or, they might look for a veteran goaltender on an expiring contract, since it looks like they are locked in with Smith and might need to have space for Skinner next season. Its not ideal from the perspective of an Oiler fan, but given the challenges of moving Koskinen's contract, it seems probable.

The 2nd line has no play drivers - Beauvillier is the main driver of that line. Bellows is strictly a finisher, Yamamoto is more of a defensive minded middle 6 winger. The 3rd lis terrible, Bailey is cooked and Palmieri can't score. The 4th line has been one of the worst lines in the entire NHL this season, what makes you think theyre going to rebound when 2 of them are in their mid 30's?

This is classic undervaluing of the isles current players just to bring overrated players who won't improve the team at all.

Oilers don’t do that. I’ve said it on a million posts already, Varlamov is not the goalie he once was. He’s on the wrong side of 30 and signed another year at a pretty decent cap hit. Acquiring him would immediately delay the ability to get the long term solution we have been looking for. If Varlamov doesn’t rebound, which is entirely possible and very likely playing behind a weak Edmonton blue line, that’s another wasted year.

A 1st and Yamamoto is a pretty decent package and should net you an impact player. Varlamov ain’t it
