In the past I've liked the idea of Edmonton acquiring Varlamov, but at this point I don't think it makes sense for the Oilers. Last summer, Ken Holland committed two seasons to Mike Smith, and his injuries have forced the Oilers to have a close look at Stuart Skinner's development. For his part, the rookie has played well, despite a lackluster record. Smith began to show signs of a return to form, even though the Oilers remain in a funk after he came of LTIR. I think Edmonton feels they may have good goaltending if Smith remains healthy and Skinner is recalled after his current stint in Bakersfield. They might decide to assign Koskinen to Bakersfield, or figure out how to leverage the taxi squad in order to carry three goaltenders. Or, they might look for a veteran goaltender on an expiring contract, since it looks like they are locked in with Smith and might need to have space for Skinner next season. Its not ideal from the perspective of an Oiler fan, but given the challenges of moving Koskinen's contract, it seems probable.
