Getting creative

Created by: Dpellz90
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 9, 2022
Published: Jan. 17, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trade explanations: DISCLAIMER: first 2 trades don't have to involve those teams specifically, just more of an idea of what can be had in return for those players.

CGY: $2.2 million is too much for a 4th line center, and way too much for Blueger who is inept offensively and not amazing defensively. Zohorna can easily fill that role at less than half the cost

EDM: Kapanen sucks, let's be real. Hopefully, Holland hasn't been fired by this time and makes an ill-advised trade.

ARZ: Bad contract swaps. Arizona gets a pick upgrade even though the Pens are getting the worse contract

SEA: See additional details

He generates scoring chances at a FAR BETTER rate than Pettersson. It's not even close.

“Kapanen sucks, let’s be real”. You be real! Haha. Kapanen does not suck. If you think a right shot 25 year old winger with 20 points in 36 games with a plus 3 is bad, then I don’t know what to tell you. He is far from bad, and I would gladly take that just to get a top 6 forward, then move players to afford him later.

I mean, he has 12 points in 37 games playing about 20 mins a night. That's not a big improvement by any stretch of the imagination. If you want offense, you go for Vince Dunn instead. Forget Oleksiak he's nothing special.

Sucks defensively? Then don't trade him to Calgary. Sutter is a defense 1st coach

He doesn't contribute anything offensively (and no, points are not an indication of offensive talent), he's a liability defensively, and plus-minus is the most useless stat to exist in the sport.

I am in no way a proponent of the eye test, but all you have to do is watch one Pens game and see how he kills the offense every time he touches the puck and doesn't give the slightest care defensively.

I never said he sucks, I said he's not as great as many think he is. He's still above average, but his absolute ineptitude offensively doesn't justify his cap hit.

Points for defenseman (and for all players in general) aren't the best way to judge offensive talent. His underlying offensive metrics suggest he's above average offensively.

I don't even have to ask you what you think because any opinion you have about the players involved is guaranteed to be wrong.

This is not true. Kapanen is very good defensively, and his points shows it. He is very decent defensively too. He is very quick, so he can easily keep up with most players in the game. He is not lazy defensively, and yes, I have seen plenty of Pens games, so I will say, he is not bad, he is very good, and plenty of teams would give a lot for him. And if he’s so bad, and Blueger is overpaid, and downright sucks, what makes you think that teams would give that much for them? But then again, they are good, especially Kapanen.. I’m not confident that you actually have either watched him, or know who he is.

Well, I just looked, Vince Dunn's metrics are superior in essentially every category. Also, Oleksiak is a known defensive defenseman. 63% of his zone starts are in the D zone, 37% in the O zone. Why wouldn't you just target the player who is better offensively and 4 years younger?

So he's what Calgary does not need then? because they have a sever lack of depth scoring on the roster and no need for bottom 6 centers

Kapanen is not good defensively. There isn't any data to substantiate that opinion. Yea sure he's fast, but he never puts himself in positions that allows him to utilize his speed.

Blueger is absolutely overpaid. He's a good defensive 4th line center. There are many of these types of players that can be signed in free agency or picked up on waivers that make 750K (Riley Nash comes to mind).

Just because I don't see much value in them doesn't mean NHL GMs don't see value in them. I'm sure there are at least a few GMs that would be willing to give up some sort of value to get these players.

Ok fair, if Calgary doesn't need him, then I guess you're right, but I did specify that it didn't have to be Calgary involved, it was just a placeholder to see what he could get in return.

Lets just look at the stats then...

Blueger currently has 15 in 36, which means that he is on pace for 34 points. To me, that is pretty impressive for a 4th liner. The Penguins also have the best PK in the league, which he is a huge part of.
Kapanen has 20 in 36, meaning a pace of 46. I dont think its fair to say he has sucked, but he has not lived up to what was expected. I could defo see the Pens trading him in a 1 for 1 kind of deal.
Matheson has played quite well, but Schmaltz is still worth more than just moving up one round. I do hope to somehow get rid of Matheson, since we need to free up a spot for POJ.
I personnally keep Pettersson over Oleksiak.. the contract, the age, it is just better.. not to mention a 2nd and Poulin being added shouldnt be something the Pens do. The Pens have Marino and Matheson as offensive minded defensemen who play on the PP2 and put up points. We should keep a more defensive guy like Pettersson.

Stupid opinions that are cannot be substantiated (many of which the other user holds) should be treated as such.

I disagree. Kapanen is very good all around in my opinion. Every team would love to have him, and he is very fast and puts up some pretty good numbers 5v5. He is helping your team so much right now. You just said in your description that Blueger sucks defensively, and now he’s good? Im confused because that makes no sense. Are you just watching their off games, or are we not watching the same thing? The Kapanen i know, is very good and really good offensively.

Points don't matter. Blueger literally has the worst xGF/60 impact of anyone on the team (24 skaters). Kapanen is 16th in that regard. So to say they're good offensively just isn't true.

Matheson hasn't been horrible, I'll admit I hold a grudge against him but I don't see how you can justify that contract to a 3rd pair d-man, and especially with minimal cap increases I don't see how that contract gets moved without another relatively bad one coming in.

Pettersson, like Marino and Dumoulin, is not good offensively. Oleksiak has shown some offensive upside over the past few years while being better defensively. He's well worth that contract and to be quite honest I don't see Poulin becoming anything more than a decent 3rd liner. The Pens already have a lot of those players in the organization and they can be signed from free agency for nothing too expensive, and the 2nd rounder is just an added bonus.

I didn't say Blueger sucks defensively, I said he's not as good as many make him out to be, he's still an above-average defensively-minded 4th line center. $2.2 million for someone who's very limited offensively and not elite defensively is a steep price tag especially when cap space is so valuable to have.

I would honestly be shocked if Blueger went anywhere..
Kapanen, like I said, I could see.
Matheson being on the 3rd pairing is not justifiable, but he does not get in over anyone in the top 4 and we cant bench him, so we kind of have our hands forced.
Marino has 16 in 37. He obviously does not generate the same kind of offense as Letang, but still does a good job.
