Dear Kings, we know you just are leaving a rebuild and spent years getting younger, but could we entice you to take on a 30+ player who is on track to score 7 goals over a season with multi-years at $5M and no longer living up to his contract, also we have 39-year-old Andy Green who is being carried by his d-partner? We know these seem like cap dumps but we only ask for Edler who is on LTIR and done for the season, 3rd, and 4th.?

In what way is he not living up to his contract? Can you tell me 1 player making less than him thats been on a 50 point pace ( over 82 games) for the last 6 seasons. And 4 of those years have been under trotz. Is he an elite player? No. But hes been the most consistent non elite player in the league for the last half a decade.

Kings have no interest in Greene and little interest in Bailey. I just don't see the need for a $5 million third-line forward.

I disagree, I'll get to that, but first. The Kings need goal scoring more than anything and a guy sitting at 3 goals isn't going to cut it, if he's a great playmaker I'm not sure we need that, Kopitar and Danault have that area covered quite well.

But as to why I believe Bailey is on the decline. His limited goal-scoring ability since his extension is on the decline which is pretty incredible considering he had an improvement in linemates with Barzal and Lee and gets a 60% o-zone deployment. His possession numbers (Corsi/Fenwick) have declined since his contract signing and are the worst among his linemates, his points are superficially inflated by Barzal. When he plays on the second line he has a -3 goal differential, a double-digit loss in possession numbers. I'm also seeing him play a lot less power play time, which I would be concerened about for a $5M player. Play him on the 3rd line against easier competition and I still don't think you'd see 50 points from him in a season.

Isles shouldn't retain on Varly. Eats too much into next year's cap

Listen i dont think that the kings are the right fit at all ill give you that. As for declining yes hes declining but that is very different than not living up to his contract. He also has 2 qualities that are really important to gms. 1- consistency. Like i mentioned hes been consistent as hell in the last half decade. 2- a ton of playoff experience. Now with kopitar and potentially brown on the kings this isnt so useful but its something that a lot of gms put a lot of stock into.
Theres also 1 more part to this. Bailey plays in a system that is terrible for his skillset. He is not great defensively or in the corners. Yet those are the 2 areas that are most important in the trotz system. In a more up and down, offensive minded system i think he can be a very solid 2nd line playmaker and play pp2.
As for your concern about the pp, that started bc he is the forward who runs the pp on the 2nd unit. But barry has started playing barzal for the whole pp so he doesnt really have a role anymore.

I get that, I really do, systems can be brutal on a player (and end them up in a dog house) Bailey is still putting up points which is admirable. Eventually the Isles will find that winger that just gets it with Barzal (a difficult ask) and once that happens Bailey will be the short straw, and his numbers on that second line should trouble you. Maybe he just needs more time, but for me if Bailey was a free agent, I'd be reluctant to sign him for $5x3.

Oh i dont think bailey would get 2×5m this offseason if he were a FA but its not a terrible contract, the production is still there.
