Plan for Cap Hell

Created by: OutCold13
Team: 2022-23 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 31, 2022
Published: Feb. 5, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
We keep talking about if Wild keep Dumba and move Fiala or sign Fiala and move Dumba. In reality Wild can't afford either player long term. Boldy is a stud and will be getting paid when his ELC is up. So Wild will need cap space to do that.
Zadina has loads of potential but hasn't been able to unleash it in Detroit, he is a great change of scenery candidate, and he won't demand significant money while Wild are in cap hell.

Not sure Dumba is a fit in Florida next season but this is the kind of return i would expect. Denisenko is Russian so hoping he would think the game like Kaprizov and he is a right shot winger something the Wild continue to lack.

When Talbots contract ends Wild can bring up Wallstedt.
As Merrill, Kulikov, and Benn's contracts expire Wild can bring up Lambos, O'Rourke, Hunt or Peart. Not that i believe all of them will become NHL level defenseman but they all look good and i would expect 2 of the four will make it in the NHL.
This should get the Wild past their cap problems and hopefully the cap will start to rise again soon. Additionally hope the Wild can continue to draft well so the prospect pool stays strong.

That's about as good as plan you can get to keep the Wild cap compliant and get good value (player and pick) for Dumba and Fiala.

So many teams are so close to the cap, I'm doubting you trade Dumba without taking cap back. But if do that Fiala trade, you have the cap for Dumba, and it makes the Wild better for strong playoff run next year/

Bear for Dumba swap to save about 3.5 million in cap? With that alone, you could afford to keep FIala.

I'd think they try to keep Fiala and Dumba next year for another playoff run depending on what Fiala is asking for. Boldy's next contract is something to worry about the summer after when you've seen what he can do in a full season. Even if he produces, they could probably get him on a cheaper 2 year bridge deal to cover the last 2 years of Parise/Suter's significant dead cap and then sign him long-term with the freed up cap space they have in the summer of 2025. I like Addison, but he's not a top 4 dman just yet and it would be kinda silly to rush him only to find out he's not up to the task. Same thing with Rossi; he won't be expected to do as much behind Hartman and Ek so he'll have time to get used to the NHL to see if he'll make it as a center.

Edit: But who knows, maybe Guerin tries to get ahead of things and tries to sign Boldy this summer to an extension gambling he'll be worth whatever he can sign him for.
