Ottawa can probably get a 5th without retaining or taking back another contract. Declined.

I like that most of the deals are low cost acquisitions. Pretty fitting for where the team is at try to take a step forward rather than a leap. The one big deal did make is an interesting good target however think the deal needs to be reshaped. Just because of loyalty and respect I don’t see russell going anywhere from everything I’ve gathered following the team he’s EXTREMELY well respected within the organization from top to bottom. I suppose anything can happen but seems pretty doubtful will use him just to make cap work. Bourgault would be really shocking if Holland suddenly decided to move. I like the target very fitting towards a need just think need to find another way of getting and fitting. Overall I’d say good job

Why do people make a big deal out of taking back an expiring contract? Just find confusing

not really any sense in doing someone else a favour without getting compensated i guess. I dont really care in this case because I think Turris would sooner retire than play for the sens again lol

Probably. I just find amusing how often people reject good trades because of taking back a contract very few seem to understand that it’s required to make the trade and get anything. This site gets way overblown with that type of stuff expecting double the returns.

Especially when the contract expires at the end of the season. I understand "paying" to offload a bad contract with term, but a contract that expires at the end of the year who gives a damn? Wouldn't the trading team rather gain an asset (or more) as opposed to nothing? Very odd...

In this case, Ottawa’s better off keeping Sanford than trading him out with Money retained AND taking the Turris contract for a 5th.

Ottawa’s actually saving Edmonton 650k against the cap along with giving them the better player for less than was paid to acquire Sanford less than a calendar year ago.

Hard pass. No free favours lol.

I'm not making a big deal out of it, but in a season where owners are hemorrhaging money because they can't have people at the games, why would Melnyk want to retain salary on Sanford AND pick up Turris' salary on top of it when he can probably get a 5th round pick without doing either of those things??

Ya but realistically what sort of market would there be for sandford? Let’s assume Ottawa had no intention to keep past this year otherwise reason for declining is very different conversation. You’d turn down the pick because it meant had to take some expiring money back? Both contracts expire at the end of the year in one case your left with a pick in another case you get absolutely nothing. That’s where I think the logic gets lost on here. If suggest plan is to resign or that you’d like to see him resigned 100% respect that opinion just don’t agree with logic refuse to take back an expiring contract in order to get a pick for an asset planning to let walk.

If can get the pick without doing those things sure but that’s suggesting there’s a bigger market for sandford and more teams interested than I think there would be. I’m just against how often on this site see people refuse reasonable trades because it requires sending an expiring contract back and that makes no sense to me to get hung up on that sort of thing.

I hear you and in theory it makes sense. If the pick (or a lower pick) was coming to Ottawa to take whatever is left on the 1.65m then that checks out. But I think in this case, regardless of whether or not Sanford resigns, they’re better off just keeping him.

Melnyk is notoriously stingy and Sanford has been serviceable. Like I said he was traded straight up for a 4th at the start of the season so at the very least I think they’d hope to get that back for him. Retaining 1m, taking on 1.65m and only getting a 5th for that same player would be as admission that they messed up and I don’t think Melnyk would want that stain on top of his wallet hurting more.

I wasn't rude, and I rationally explained why I disagreed. People who only want to voice their opinions without feedback should probably not use this site.
