Dumba will be an expiring UFA in 22-23 yes, which means you could 1 if the team is as bad as they are this year, move him as a rental on a relatively cheap contract, 2 Im guessing you are saying that hes second pair because Ellis is also a RHD? Because he would be the second best D man on Philly, not an opinion, based on the analytics and MV. Not entirely sure why you would ever acquire a UFA then if you have no leverage to resign them, seems really stupid to me why anyone would ever trade for a UFA player then unless they are a rental because they don't ever resign.
AND YOUVE FIGURED IT OUT! Thats exactly what Fletcher has done with Risto, and my point is, he won't do it with Dumba. And its irrelevant whther Dumba is the best defenseman or worst on the Philly team, because as a UFA hes not part of a rebuild and hes not taking a huge discount if he sucks and he'd want a massive re-sign if he's good = no leverage.
No one trades for a UFA unless they are going into the playoffs or they have a re-sign strategy in place.
Fletcher did it for Risto, who was a risky choice, thinking the team was quality and could survive whichever Risto showed up, but injuries killed the team, so making risto a long term part of the team is more of a question.
Ultimately a UFA to be thwe next yr, (as you say going on IR in 21-22), to a team at the deadline out of playoff race never happens. Dumba has good value, but probably not to Philly, and certainly not at the deadline
