Canes deadline- realistic all in approach

Initial Creation Date: Feb. 15, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
DAL
  1. Bear, Ethan
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (CHI)
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
Don has to know if he does this he likely can't resign both TDA and Klingberg after the season is over given the current cap situation. Klingberg has left Dallas no leverage in making a deal since he expressed he's unlikely to resign there after the season is over. I think Dallas takes some picks and a young defenseman w good upside while the canes go all in on this year acquiring another elite puck mover and QB for PP2.
2.
VAN
  1. Bokk, Dominik
  2. Chatfield, Jalen
  3. Kotkaniemi, Jesperi
  4. 2022 2nd round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
I absolutely love KK but have come to peace with moving him in a deal like this. Miller is having a terrific year and would be the 2nd line center both this year and next year at a very reasonable price. Given the inevitable loss of either Nino or Trocheck at the end of the season, you secure a top 6 guy for next year while giving yourself a chance to win it all this year with the 3 of them. I don't think Vancouver would say no to this, just a matter of the canes being willing to part ways w KK. (It also works bc of KK's 6+ mil cap hit this year)

Well those lines are weird.
(Miller - Aho - Teravainen)
(Svechnikov - Trocheck - Necas)
But yeah, I agree on the Miller end. Love KK, but if that's the type of package it would take to get Miller, I'm into it.

Doubt we get Klingberg for that though. I know he wasn't having the best season ever but he's more valuable than that I think

Seems like an underpayment for Klingberg. That’s hard to say with all the crazy overpay proposals others throw around on this site.

I don’t really see the point in paying that much for Miller. The CAR forward group is great and they’ll need Kotkaniemi next year when Trocheck likely walks.

Miller is great but trading a 1st-3rd round picks, Bokk and Chatfield seems like too much.

It does seem like an overpayment when you consider NY giving us a couple prospects and a 1st round while also wanting us to retain cap hit

Even if you wanted to - KK is not eligible to be traded for 1 year after the offer sheet. This is a CBA rule and is in effect until 2022-2023 league year.

False.

He can be traded at any time by the Canes. Had Montreal matched the offer sheet, then they’d be restricted in trading him for a year.

And now you know it’s not right. That restriction only applies to a team that matches an offer sheet, not the team that poaches a player via an offer sheet.

Spock is correct, my bad. But - you are now trading KK’s RFA rights, 1st 2nd 3rd Bokk & Chatfield (a player who was just re-signed) for 1.5 years if JT Miller. I love Miller, but that isn’t good asset management.

Very true for asset management however if getting JT Miller costed the trade like this, I could see both teams being interested. At the end of the day it’s about putting the best team on the ice and with how deep Carolina is, I do think this trade won’t hurt much in the long run

And everybody criticizes Canucks fans for overvaluing their players, Chatfield and Bokk, both have little to no value. The 2nd is nice, but I don't think the Canucks want KK as the center piece coming back in a Miller trade

Right now Miller costs the equivalent of 3 1st round picks minimum, that package comes nowhere close to that type of value

You're not trading Kotkaniemi and a 1st & 3rd (plus the rest) though. You can either think of it as Kotkaniemi's rights or your 1st & 3rd, but not both. Of course it sounds like too much, when you're listing the centrepiece of deal twice.

Your view point is as a trade, mine was asset management. And yes you have to think of it as RFA rights from the Canes perspective. You don’t have KK after this year nor your 1st or 3rd. Unless of course you are only thinking about KK as a 1/2 year rental.
