Devils don't need Smith's dead cap next season... especially if they're trading a solid goaltending prospect to get it.

Why would we trade a goalie prospect in a lost season for a really bad goalie collecting social security checks?

Devils are out of the playoff picture, there's no reason for them to be adding veterans(with term!) at the expense of their younger players. Especially since Nico Daws seems to be playing fine - you've got 23 games left, let him get some run and build off this nice start he's had.

Akira Schmid was 2021 USHL goaltender of the year. And is a candidate for Bastien award (AHL best goalie) in 2022. We shouldn’t be moving him.

plus we can't discount the huge drop in name quality going from "Akira Schmid" (strong, powerful, mysterious) to "Mike Smith" (boring, common, middle-management)
