This is the strangest one I've seen you do I think. Is Buffalo done their rebuild? Giving away assets instead of trying to sign UFAs seems a little strange to me

I traded one first and got another one back.

I didn't touch the core

If we aren't competitive, okposo, JVR, girgensons and Anderson will all get rental interest at deadline.

Still have 7 picks in the first 2 rounds in 2022 and 2023 drafts

That's fair but can you explain the thought behind Karlsson and Ellis? Karlsson's contract specifically is going to get very bad and will not help Buffalo get high quality guys signed

We are going to have guys on ELCs and bridge deals for a while.

Building through free agency is bad

Ellis is perfect for Power

We'd be overpaying in UFA anyways

Yeah I can't get behind this one. Just seems like bad excuses to pick up a terrible contract.

I don't think its realistic. Gotta have fun on here sometimes.

But I do think SJ could (really should) be desperate enough to get out of some of these contracts that they'd trade a 1st in a supposedly great draft to move him.

Dahlin gets a swedish uncle that he should have had from day 1.

EK will be in his last year of contract when we have to resign Cozens coming off his bridge, you hope you can bridge, Quinn, Krebs and Peterka. Tage might demand alot if he continues as he has so extending him could create issues, Dahlin will also need a new extension before Ellis and EKs contracts run out, and that's an extra 4/5 million probably.

We dont know what the cap will be, JVR, Okposo, Girgensons, Anderson = 17 million alone

Can't add EK. No can do. Need to re-sign Dahlin, and you've got several RFA deals coming up in 3/4/5/6 years. Basically every core piece.

No no no

Let's assume Cozens does we and gets a Dahlin bridge, that's 6x3, assuming Krebs and Quinn do well bridge them both at about 5x3. Peterka maybe 2x3. That's 18m in adds, then add Dahlin at 10x8, your now at 22m, Sam and Asplund get 2/3x4, 26-28m and then Thompson gets 7x8, 34m more. Idk that's just some quick estimates. We could definitely do Ellis, but probably no EK. + Dahlins just our version of EK already and I wouldn't want him taking Power play time from Dahlin or Power.

Everything will be fine. 17 million comes off the cap next year and will be replaced with ELC players largely.

Its ok.

Breathe.

I mean, if you want to pretend every single player will be amazing, then its a great problem to have and we can deal with it in 3 years by buying out skinner or karlsson.

we also have a waive of ELCs coming from our 2021-2023 drafts.

I'm just trying to have fun here.

Can’t see the sharks moving Karlsson after year he’s currently having, certainly not giving up a 1st to move him.

He has a huge QO, can take it and then walk right to UFA as you are paying senior citizens Burns, Karlsson and Couture 27.5 million combined (likely adding Hertl to that list).

Burns is a player that would make more sense for Buffalo. But he also makes no sense for Buffalo, as he isn't the kind of defenseman we are looking for, and he's just another offensive guy and there's not enough power play minutes to go around.

He is a big bodied veteran, and the contract is better than EK. But still, no.

Or, since we are throwing out random ideas that have no merit to them, the sharks sign him to a long term deal instead. That is something that’s still aloud right? Can also move out cap in Labanc, Simek, Burns and can even buy out Vlasic. It’s not that difficult to make it work

Not sure you have the money if you keep Karlsson and hertl. No one is trading for burns and the buyout cost for vlasic hurts the first couple years.

Burns plus a 3rd for nothing...maybe some team out there would do that. Probably not the Sabres. I guess he could pair with Samuelsson. But Sabres would ask for retention, like 3 million.

Burns (3 million retained)
2023 SJS 3rd

2022 BS 7th

That's the best I would do, and I wouldn't like it, but if he is a good mentor for Samuelsson and the rest of the Buffalo D we would make the money work, probably buyout the final year.

Burns is easily moveable if the sharks want to move him, which they don’t. He’s still considered to be a 3-4th defenseman on most teams and still puts up points, 40 in 58 games which is tied for 12th in the league amongst defenseman. If the sharks even retain money, which saves them cap overall, he’s easily tradable.

Lol Burns with a 3rd and San Jose retaining $9 mil for a 7th? He’s 12th amongst defenseman in points and plays more than 25 minutes a night. That’s a terrible trade for San Jose.
