the first is not protected. the trade opens 8mil in cap space for the next three years and SJ has around 20 players to resign in the next two off seasons including Meier

Not protected. If Ottawa goes for a playoff spot like DJ has said, they could get some service out of Burns, and he could mentor Ottawa's young offensive defensemen like Brannstrom. I see it as a win win for both sides

ok so Ottawa definitely says no to that then why would they want to take on an additional 8 Mil in cap space for the next 3 years....

Ottawa can definitely afford it, especially with speculation of buying out Colin White and/or Matt Murray which would open up more cap space. SJs pick is currently projected at number 11, which would be great considering they would have 2 top 15 picks, with one likely in the top 3. Burns provides playoff experience and great leadership which I think Ottawa will need considering they want to make the playoffs next season, plus Burns still produces even though he's 37.

even if both teams agreed Burns holds the trump card with a 3 team trade list , pretty sure Ottawa is not one of the teams he would agree to go to

That was the only issue I had with this trade. The sens are probably not his ideal location to be traded, but considering the young talent they have on their roster and their playoff aspirations, they could persuade him to come here.

if Ottawa was a cup contender perhaps but they need to become a playoff contender first. If someone had earned 90 million in their career and spent the last 11 years not dealing with winter it would likely take one helluva sales pitch to get them to make the move.

The problem is that not many playoff contender team have cap space for 8 million for 3 years. So Ottawa could be one of better team to accept is contrat.

With Karlsson's contract at 11.5mil for till 26/27, Burns at 8mil till 24/25 Vlasic at 7mil till 25/26 , Couture at 8mil till 26/17 and now Hertl at 8.2mil till 29/30, good luck finding the money for players like Dahlen Ferraro Knyzhov Gregor this offseason and the Meier next off season. Not to mention Karlsson Vlasic Couture Hertl and presumably Meier will be under big contracts when Weisblatt Coe and Eklund will need extensions in 2024-25. An unprotected 1st to keep multiple players in the coming years is not very unrealistic

Yeah not paying to dump a contract with non-negative value. Pure lunacy.

I’d be lying if I said Burns was playing consistently great this season but jesus christ hes 13th in scoring amongst defensmen. The Sharks giving up more than a 4th to get rid of his full cap hit is totally preposterous. The NTC throws a wrench in things but I have a hard time believing no one would take him after the Flyers decided to trade 14th overall for a literal pylon in Ristolainen then give him a 25.5 million dollar contract.

It’s wildly unrealistic, who the hell would trade an unprotected 1st for a guy who isn’t a negative asset? Could easily retain a few mil, even half, and be totally fine.

Also, Ottawa has big names to sign that this deal would block (Norris, formenton, brannstrom this year and Stutzle next year). Burns contract is just too long and expensive for this to be worthwhile. Also, they need top 6 wingers more than a bottom 4 defenceman on his way out.
