Is a Seth Jones trade even possible

Created by: Jco5ta5
Team: 2022-23 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 17, 2022
Published: Mar. 17, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The easy answer of course is no...BUT HEAR ME OUT. Nobody wants him for 8 years at $9.5M, I get it. I certainly don't. BUT...I chose NJD because they have Hischier, Hughes, and Dougie committed long term already and Subban is coming off the books. They don't/won't have too many high profile RFAs that will cost them tons of money until probably Luke Hughes in 4 years. They certainly have the flexibility to bring him in with some retention and he would be a great addition/upgrade the D corps.

NJD is a younger, up and coming team. With Dougie and Seth in the fold and then adding Luke Hughes, they can be a defensive force while their young guy's offense starts to come around.

Realistically, who can take on a Seth Jones trade?

You're not getting a top 10 pick for him

Probably not. But also, we're sitting behind a computer, real GMs aren't. They have real jobs and real teams to manage and contract aside, Seth Jones is a hell of a hockey player. There might be someone in real life who would be willing to take him if they're on the hot seat or something like Bowman did.

If the Devils trade for Seth Jones I might pick a new team (not really but he's gotta have a top 5 worst deal in the league and has been outright bad in past years)

Never say never. CBJ got a #12 overall AND a top 10 pick for him. Considering that, this asking price is fair.

Bad contract yes. Outright bad, nah. He's been pretty good but he's on a **** team and a sinking ship. At least on the Devils I see them rising soon and dollar for dollar he's way better than Subban and with Luke Hughes coming soon and being cheap for the first 3 years, I think he could be a nice addition.

The Blackhawks recently traded for him and then gave him an 8-year deal that starts next season, so why on earth would they even consider trading him, let alone retain part of his cap hit for 8 years? It's a ridicules premise.

I just fail to see the point in Devils trading for him.
Already got a big contract RHD in Hamilton that's two years shorter, 500k cheaper aav and far far better player than Jones.
Not that I think he can be traded due to current 10 team nmc, full nmc when extension kicks in and that I cannot believe a single team with the cap space available would be interested in trading for him.

FWIW, I'd be calling for Fitzgerald's head if he even traded a 7th rd pick for Seth Jones at this point, let alone top 10 ova.
Trading for Jones should be a criminal offence.

He wasn't on one of the worst deals in the whole league then. He is now. That contract is untradeable for the coming years.

Because the GM who traded for him and signed him to that albatross isn't the current GM and the current GM has come out and said he's rebuilding the team and selling off assets. He's even fielding phone calls about Kane. So nobody is untouchable. If I'm him, and someone offered me something for Seth Jones, I'm taking it. I'm getting out from underneath it.

Kane has 1 more year on his deal and is 33, so moving him to get a bunch of young assets and draft picks makes sense if you want to rebuild. Seth Jones is 27 and he is a top pair RD, which are hard to find at his age and skill level and not cheap to sign, hence his current contract. Jones is your top pair RD for the next 8 years through the rebuild process. Comparing the two is apples to oranges. If Chicago were to trade him after 1 year, and retain salary, it would be the silliest move a very good franchise would make in a very long time.

I'd rather keep Seth and build around him. He's going to be a number one defenseman for a long time

I don't totally agree. Seth Jones at $8M is a big asset for almost every team. $8.5M gets a little questionable, $9.5M is too much, but let's not pretend for a minute he isn't a top 20 d man (if not top 10) in the league entering the prime of his career. Jones is really good and if the retention was $1.5M I'm pretty sure there would be teams willing to give up quite a bit who are entering their competitive run for the next 3 to 5 years.

So basically you want a 1st+ for him, but are willing to admit that he is not worth what you paid for him, and want to rip someone else off now...

What is confusing about your argument is you admit that Seth is a "hell of a hockey player", and he is, but you want to dump him and retain salary too. So what I see is you feel he is a good player that is overpaid, which may be true, but is it all that bad to overpay a top pair RD a little at age 27? You want to retain $1/m a year, so that implies to me that you think he is worth about $7m/year. So he makes a little more than your comfortable with, but keep in mind the position he plays (RD) and how hard it is to find really good top pair right hand D. That has to be factored in, no? Plus, is $1m per year really going to be that critical if the Hawks do a rebuild? They will probably move Kane and Toews and have a lot of young players on ELC's in the near future, so the cap shouldn't be a big factor in the near term.

Not a chance he's Top 10, top 20 will be difficult. I'll take each of Makar, Fox, McAvoy, Josi, Hamilton, Ekblad, Hedman, Weegar, Slavin, Theodore, Pietrangelo, Rielly, Toews, Heiskanen, Letang, Seider, Werenski, Chabot, Brodin, Muzzin and Chychrun over Jones without hesitation (no particular order). Give Jones the same deal as each of them when comparing them and Jones isn't my choice even once.
