Way too much for Buffalo. A team like tampa would make this trade

Am I missing something, or is dishing out a 1st, an RFA, and a prospect for a pending UFA a bad idea for a rebuilding team?

You're not missing anything as I agree with you.

I made that argument to the person who suggested this idea 😅😂

He's not pending UFA. Under contract for next season as well

Boy that's an awful lot. Even if there was more term that's a lot. For all of the tim Murray haters out there, this is a Tim Murray trade. I don't hate Tim Murray, you have to have a plan, and if you see a difference maker, don't be afraid to go get them. Unfortunately, you will be crucified if those moves don't work. Is Mayfield that piece that complements the other pieces on d to make us much better in our own end? Would he be willing to stay? Not to go too far off on a tangent, but I firmly believe we don't have a #1 center, and you bump your head on the ceiling pretty quick without one. I think I would see where I'm drafting before really considering this. We aren't going anywhere next season, not in our division.

He's going to be a UFA after next season, which is a season that isn't expected to be a playoff one for the Sabres.

More importantly, why would he agree to sign an extension with Buffalo?

Thank you for pointing that out, that definitely changes my whole perspective on the trade. Why haven't they done this yet?!

- They're not a good team
- All he has to do is play well next season and wait to be a UFA
- He'll get to fully control where he goes
- From the Sabres perspective, they'd almost assuredly need to overpay in dollars, term, or both to get him to forego going to UFA status
- That would mean they'd be overpaying in assets and contract
- I don't believe Mayfield is a player that commands that kind of overpayment

Payment isn't my question...this team is on the rise, more and more top prospects are coming up. Doesn't matter who you acquire it will be an over payment. Next year we will need salary to reach the floor with all the ELC's we will have. The Bills are a prime example...start winning and Beane has had to turn players down who have contacted him about coming here.

In general you are correct, but in this situation it makes sense. The Sabres have 3 firsts this year and 3 seconds next year + what ever they get at the deadline. So they may start to hit a log jam soon. The Sabres have also done a great job stock piling young talent that is finally starting to show signs of development. Finally, the Sabres have an organizational need at RD and want to find a steady vet to play with Power once the NCAA season is finished.

TLDR: the Sabres have a ton of future assets and are willing to move some (lower level ones) to get a young vet to help the teams development.

I see your point, but for this package, surely the Sabres could find a better target, no?

There are not a lot of RD out there these days. Particularly ones that are under control for 2023 as well.

Don't they need to actually start winning consistently first?

It's coming, Rome wasn't built in a day and worst case scenario they can trade him at next years TDL. It's a tight team now, no cancer in the dressing room. Good leadership in Tuch and Okposo. Again who says the Islanders are willing to trade him...I haven't him in the trade gossip

How is this a TM trade, are the Sabres resigning Olofsson long term, Bryson is nice but we have a plethora of LD.

Two things:

- It's all about if Mayfield will extend, which seems highly questionable, but also;
- I'm not giving up a 1st round pick for Mayfield. I'm aiming for a better player then that
