Only $1.6M under the cap with the retention, not $5.2M, right?
Due to the way you did the deal.
They would be right at the cap limit for the 25-26 season, but would have flexibility after that 👍

I don't think there's any chance Chandler Stephenson accepts a 3 year deal at $4M per from anyone, let alone the Sabres.
His projected next deal is 5 years at $5.7M per.
He has a big fan club league wide.

Sabres Key Decision Season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boos</b></div><div>I don't think Quinn gets that and it's not because of his talent, which is pretty obvious. Dude has been having trouble staying on the ice. January 2022, LBI week-to-week; June 2023, Achilles out until December; January 2024, LBI, week-to-week. Can't do that kind of money for a player that's struggling with injuries on a yearly basis. Two-year bridge is cool, but I'm gonna tamp that back to $3M per, give or take. And that's if I'd even extend him this off season.
As for the rest, go for JJ extension this year--$4-4.5M; Casey $5.5-6M (five year deal?); Levi, UPL and Krebs a little less, RJ a little more. Am thinking a total savings from your projection of at least $3M.
That said, I get your thought process.</div></div>
Miss you on HB brother 🙏
You did notice this is a projection for the 25-26 season?
I did an analysis on some Quinn and Peterka comparables, and it was a 4% of cap hit for Quinn, which is close to $4M, which is why I rounded up.
Quinn also played in 75 games last season.
No injury issue then.
Overall, Casey and JJ are only trending up.
The price is only going to rise along with that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DDossett</b></div><div>At full price no less. Im all for holding off on too many long term contracts but if you're not going to get FA years out of the deal why pay top dollar?
I'm not saying you should rip players off but you need 4 more players on this team and have about 5 mil to spend doesnt leave much wiggle room. Plus thats only 1 extra (7)defensemen and the sabres need at least 8 to start the season so they can pick one up on waivers, call a guy up, maybe trade picks for a bubble guy and get 11ish by mid season.</div></div>
It's not walking anyone to UFA status except UPL.
All of Ryan Johnson, Krebs, Peterka and Quinn would have 2 years left of RFA eligibility after these deals are up.
They would have $11M to spend on 5 to 6 bottom of the roster players to bring in, with the expected $92M cap limit in 2 seasons, and that's if they don't just go with internal promotions at forward, like Rosen and Savoie.

His career has done quite the 180 but this feels closer to a huberdeau thing than a tage thing if that makes sense. He's unquestionably good now but Im not sure his true impact is worth 7 mil. If they miss this year there will be tons of pressure to do something in goal and that would likely require a contract going out either in that deal or elsewhere.</div></div>
He very well could price himself out, but the current Sabres management has shown a near total inability to move on from almost any player.
Look at Olofsson, as a prime example.

Montreal gets much needed cap space and a guy they'll likely showcase all year to take at TDL. Worked out well for Chiarot so I'm all in on this one.</div></div>
The above is inaccurate and incorrect.
To clear up a common misconception:
A team does NOT need to be below the upper limit to start the season on LTIR.
They can use the LTIR training-camp equation on the day prior to season start and place players on LTIR while already above the limit.

With the likelihood of injuries, especially with the Sabres injury history and how they handle them, Peterka and Quinn will both end up playing a lot of Sabres games, even if they begin the year in Rochester.
Assuming Quinn can finally be healthy...

Am assuming UPL is in the AHL?</div></div>
I think they'll go cheaper pretty much everywhere because they're cheap 😆😂😅, agreed.
UPL would either start in the AHL and be up if an injury happens, or if he wins a job in camp, Comrie would be waived to Rochester.

To me I would rather be in the same boat as this past year with the development of Quinn peterka and power. Than getting some ufas even if to start they would be more quality.</div></div>
The idea was to create at least a little competition for roster spots, such as at forward and in goal, and not just gift players places on the roster.

You have peterka on line 4 and Quinn in the press box, but I don't see it as a big problem because it will be short term- there will be injuries and slumps, hopefully when they are given their chance they kick the door down.</div></div>
Quite possibly regarding other teams bidding on Marchment.
I used his predicted salary and term from Evolving Hockey's contract prediction service on their site.

While Talbot was a flop in the playoffs, his 32-12-4 record certainly was the reason the Wild were in the playoff.
Here is the skinny, Fiala would return a good roster player, a first and a good prospect.
Mittelstadt is a decent roster player who may become a 50 pt LW/C, FLA first would be late (nearly a second), Fitzgerald's ceiling is probably 5th NHL D-man.</div></div>
Fiala would be a pending UFA.
That tends to reduce the return a bit.

Dumba is a fine 2nd pairing guy that only plays part of the season and I'm just done with at this point, Kulikov is a depth defenseman that honestly I want nothing to do with after his playoff performance, and Talbot is a below average goaltender. Every one of them can be replaced with vet min guys aside from Dumba but Addison should take over Dumba's spot anyways, he deserves the minutes.
If Fiala is taken to arb he should fetch a huge return at next year's deadline.</div></div>
Claude Giroux, a pending UFA just like Fiala would be, went for a protected 1st (2024 or 2025 draft), a 3rd and Owen Tippett.
Would you consider that a huge return? You're thinking more than that?

Buffalo has the assets and the cap space, if the owner is not pinching pennies again next season.

- They're not a good team

- From the Sabres perspective, they'd almost assuredly need to overpay in dollars, term, or both to get him to forego going to UFA status
- That would mean they'd be overpaying in assets and contract
- I don't believe Mayfield is a player that commands that kind of overpayment

Unless they made more moves to bring salary on, sending out any kind of significant salary back to Dallas in that deal would mean they're not cap compliant.

I'd be looking to trade Olofsson and uprade via trade or UFA to bring in an RW that can produce points but still positively impacts the game if not producing points with defensive ability, toughness, and physicality. Someone like Copp or Nichushkin.

Hard for me to imagine that could happen, but….
What do u think we could get for him now?
A 3rd? A mid-tier prospect?
We both agree his value has dropped this season, right?
So if we aren’t gonna get good value for him now….
Doesn’t it make sense to hang onto him till next year’s deadline to see if that value will go up?
Missing out on the 3rd or the mediocre prospect we can get now is NOT gonna bother me
If we can still get something good for him now, then great
I just doubt that we can</div></div>
The downside you're not factoring in is his taking up a roster spot that could be used for a better player that more fits the team they're trying to build for next season and beyond.
Forward spots are already going to be at a premium for next season, and they need to upgrade, unless they don't care about winning again next season.
