Post-Getzlaf Ducks

Created by: owenthearmchairgm
Team: 2022-23 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 5, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With Ryan Getzlaf set to retire after this season, it is the start of a new era for the Anaheim Ducks. This team is still going through it's rebuild and must continue to develop around core players Trevor Zegras, Jamie Drysdale, Troy Terry, and Mason McTavish. I still think this team is 2-3 years away from being potential cup contenders, so with that in mind, here is what I did with the Ducks.

Trades:

John Gibson/Sam Steel trade: Trading out Gibson may seem weird to some people, however I think it could make sense for the Ducks to get back value for Gibson with Lukas Dostal looking like a future number one goalie. Mackenzie Blackwood is another young goaltender who has fallen out of favour in New Jersey, but could potentially rebound and become a starting goalie once again. Pavel Zacha has been in the rumour mill all season and could be another nice forward to add to the Ducks. Ty Smith could be expendable for New Jersey with Luke Hughes and Shakir Mukhamadullin on the way in the near future. Sam Steel goes with Gibson for a fresh start in the East.

Free agents:

Mark Pysyk: I've liked what Pysyk has brought to the Sabres, so adding him to the backend for a cheap contract seemed like an easy decision. With lots of young defencemen on the way, I didn't want to commit too much money or term to a veteran that would block youngsters.

David Rittich: No need to rush Dostal. Rittich can split the crease with Blackwood.

Reilly Smith: Need some veterans to help the young guys. Smith has played for winning teams in Vegas and can still produce in the top 6.

Conclusion: This team is not ready to make the playoffs quite yet. The backend is still rather thin and the team is still very young. I feel like this team could have a great development year, learning what it takes to win consistently. 2023-2024 should be the year Anaheim returns to the playoffs and ends the rebuild.

Can't wait to get roasted in the comments :)

Man time sure flies. I still remember a young Getzlaf winning gold for team Canada at the WJC. As well as those great Red Wings-Ducks playoff series' in 2007 and 2009. Excellent career. 👍

Not a super big fan of the Gibby trade to be honest. Seems like it's just being done to do it...I'd rather see how he plays behind a new coach/system, because I'm fairly cetain that that's the main issue. Eakin's system is f*ckin' terrible.

With Rittich, Stolie is already here and is > than Rittich, so no real point there.

I like the Smith addition, but I'd still have Milano/Zegras/Terry on a line (unless you can upgrade at LW with a big name, which could be a solid idea at this point with the cap space/up and coming team).

I really think, given the cap space and assets that have come out of trading Hampus/Manson/D-Lo/Rakell, that Verbeek is going to package some of those assets and chase a big name though. Given that they were alledgedly in on Chychrun, it wouldn't surprise me if those talks started up again...if you can turn .25 seasons of those 4 into Chychrun and still have assets left over, you're ahead of the game.

Also, very sad to see Getz go, but also pretty happy that we got to see his entire HOF career with the Ducks. Will definitely be watching when his number is raised to the rafters next year.

I'm stunned to see a pretty reasonable trade on these things! I'd say the Devils would think very hard about accepting that. Helps both teams and doesn't strike me as a crazy price. Probably some picks on either side to balance out.

Have to agree that the Gibson trade is rubbish.
I’d keep a solid G to mentor Dokstal. I’d only trade Gibson if the return is stupendous.

Rittich signing stuck out to me, makes like 0 sense.

Was it confirmed that #15 will be retired next season?

Its an interesting trade with Devils...I would imagine they would consider it.
I was hoping Devils can add a guy to complete with Blackwood.
But Gibson would be good too.

I think I can't read. Could you quote it for me out of the article? Can't find it for the life of me.

I mean, my eyes are a bit misty every time I look at it, so it’s tough to give a direct quote…
