Was that before the 2020-21 season when the Leafs picked Simmonds over Perry?

Analytics nerds will always underrate the unquantifiable. Some things really cant be measured with stats

Mm, you can get a really good idea of the player whilst using advanced stats.

Not a complete view but a very close view and for Perry I think they wanted Kase over Perry.

I know it was a complete accident, but didn't Perry give JT a concussion? Also, Dubas could of had Hagel too, but opted not to. Drew two penalties, scored a goal, and created a number of additional scoring opportunities.

Leafs have already way too many Hagels on this team, if Dubas paid that price, I don't think he would be the Leafs GM entering the playoffs

Kase vs Perry isn't the right framing at all. They wanted Nick Ritchie over Perry.

I don't think so, apparently they circled back onto Ritchie after a while on the market.

Ritchie I believe was signed much later that Perry.

They also envision Ritchie as a compliment to Matthews and Marner.

So the Buffalo Sabres make Sam Ventura (an analytics guy) VP of hockey strategy and research and then they instantly trade Rasmus Ristolainen away. But no ya sure, analytics are pointless.

In the most polite manner possible. You simply haven't watched him play then. He could pretty easily replace Bunting.

Bunting and Hagel are very similar players with similar points all playing really well with a good support crew.

There really wasn't a need for Hagel when you have Bunting signed for another season.

But that's kinda my point though. Bunting is indeed a good player. It would be nice to be able to afford for him to play on the 3rd line where he's supposed to be for a cup winning team. That doesn't mean TOR CAN'T win it. It just means Dubas could have had a 25-goal scorer that's physical and defensively sound on their 3rd line. That's how teams win cups. Scoring from all over.

Fair enough, but to get Hagel it would've cost Toronto multiple first, plus Mattew Knies.

Also Bunting is fine on the first line and he probably is there on any good and cup winning team as he creates space for the stars and draws penalties while doing the dirty work.

Players like that don't do as much on your third line.

At the time Simmonds seemed like he'd better. And he's been fine in the grit department, which would be the whole point of adding Perry. In hindsight, yes, Perry would have been better but not the end of the world.
