Additional Details:
Now I know this is never going to happen but honestly I don't see any other kind of "working" exchange between Montreal and New Jersey that involves the 2nd overall pick. Either Caufield or Suzuki simply must be included. Guys like Anderson, Dvorak, Petry, Drouin, Gallagher, Hoffman or Allen are just way too insufficient in terms of value, and a deal formed around these assets with a random number of prospects added to the trade doesn't fundamentally solve the quantity for quality issue.

By tanking it's a definite possibility, but it needs some luck...and actually paying what the assets required are worth.

Facts it could if they are lucky, but I see some threads on here from habs fans and they offer rediculous offers lol.

4 years at $8M+ for a 35 year old defenseman just because he is from MON seems like a bad idea.

Habs should do it.

The 2nd overall is worth more than caufield. Considerably.

To an extent I agree but I honestly think someone will overpay for Letang. He's top15 D in the league even at 35.

Have enough low end defense in Dallas with Suter and Hakanpaa need a younger RHD on a cheap contract like Nils Lundkvist or one of L.A.’s 3 (after Clarke they still have: Faber, Durzi, Spence), don’t need anymore problems like Petry. Evans adds no value especially at 1.7mil, we can just call up a guy that should have had more NHL chances here like (Damiani or Dellandrea) on an ELC and they’re likely to score more than Evans.

Khudobin has 1 year I’d just sit and wait that out and bury 1million of his cap in the minors.

We don’t need to pay to get rid of Faksa just yet, can put him as a fourth liner/scratch or bury in the minors and fill out roster with the prospects we have at least a couple of them should make the cut out of Dellandrea, Damiani, Bourque, Johnston, Stank-oven. Plus that Olofsson guy from Europe just signed a league minimum deal but on a one way so I think they intended for him to play in the NHL.

All that being said I wouldn’t be surprised if our **** team went after Petry....but hopefully Oettinger, Robertson and Hintz needing deals now and next year will prevent them being able to trade for Petry.

Not even gonna try to unpack the NJ trade....

i really dont think that habs have any interest in paying what it will take to get the 2nd overall pick. That being said if they did want to go that route i assume they would be start that package with a combo of picks and prospects. Sens are rumored to want to move back from 7th i think that's a much more realistic target for the habs.

not that i can not see a deal with njd, but no way that one. your basically sending 2 players in hoffman and allen that dont have much value, for a player that has value and the 2nd overall pick and an additional 2nd?!?!?!?!?!?!? for basically caufield. deal might happen minus the 2nd rounder

Haven't both NJ and OTT said that they consider trading those picks to get better now? Because if that's the case, I don't see much incentive for neither party to move those picks for a pile of what ifs. They want something more established, and I don't think MTL has much to offer in this regard.

Allen has value. He'd form a decent tandem with Blackwood in NJ.

Hoffman is added strictly for cap reasons.

I do think Caufield has bit more value than the 2nd overall due to him being an established young asset. Zacha balances the value out there.

Considering all the arguments I had with your kind at the start of the year who thought Mrazek was a true #1, no. So most delusional fan base? It’s not even close… buds take that bud

The Habs have nothing of substance to move from like 24th to 7th. You'd be including a massive haul of picks and prospects for the Sens to consider.

The one trade I could see them moving back in is if the Jets traded for the 7th OA and included Heinola or Lucius and the 14th OA pick. Even then moving 7 spots at the top of a round is incredibly pricy and I really don't see either team doing it.

ya thats why i think Ottawa would be more likely, the 7th overall pick isnt going to land you a super star player, so it will depend what they view their needs are. But i feel like theres a much better chance of that then of getting the 2OA from the devils.

I would argue that he's not established yet. Had a really rough season (like most Habs) and is not really established cause he hasn't really had one full succesful season.

Again like i said that would depend what ottawa is looking for. The 7OA is not some a lock to pan out they arent going to be getting a superstar back with it so it depends on if theres a specific position they are looking to fill, all they said was someone who can have an impact, which is about pretty ambiguous.,

7th OA can land you anyone, the top 5 are really close and a number of really good players have been selected 7OA like Scheifele, Kadri, and Monahan. Plus there is a possiblity that one of the top 5 falls out of the top 5.

I get you're thinking but I really think that it's unlikely that a trade for Ottawa and Montreal would happen but it could look like this:

TO MON
7th OA

TO OTT

- 2022 Flames 1st round pick
-2022 Habs 2nd round pick
- 2022 Habs 3rd round pick
- Micheal Pezzetta
- Ryan Poehling
-Mattias Norlinder
- Jan Mysak
- +

But I really see the Habs just staying what they have unless they move 1 or 2 spots cause otherwise it's way to expensive.

Yes, but you can use reason to think that the person that they will get back with 7thOA will be very close to a superstar. Kevin Fiala counts as a superstar and that's who all the talk has been about. I really think that they just keep the pick and draft like Lekkerimaki or Kemell who will be a really good compliments to Stutzle.

Fair point. But let's say he's more established than your average prospect. Plus there might be some willingness from NJ's pov to overpay a little on Caufield in order to unite him with Hughes.

i fully agree that its highly unlikely, i'm jsut saying that theres a package they hypothetically put forward that could get it done, i dont they would want to pay the price though as you said. I think the habs most likely target is Columbus's own first round pick, but thats moving up 15 spots but if the Hughes has a specifc player he wants that available there can start that package with Cal 1st and Florida's 1st from next year.

The point of referencing past 7th overall picks is kind of moot, i can show you two 3rd overall picks that were pretty much complete flops form the habs recent history, that doesnt mean thats indicative of what you should expect with the 3OA lol

I'm a Dallas fan too, and I'd argue that Petry is still considerably better than Suter or Hakanpää is. Would be a good replacement for Klingberg if we can get it work, financially. Note that I'd be perfectly content with Dallas not getting Petry, but there's a fact that we need a RHD and Petry is a decent one available and might be that at reasonable pricepoint. At least I wouldn't mind if this was the haul we gave up for him. If we can get Lundqvist or one of LA's young D-men in exchange to, let's say Dellandrea, I'd be perfectly content with that.

Faksa has turned into pure sh*t. He's no longer the same defensive machine he once was. I think DAL needs to pay to get rid of him, but luckily he has a cheap buyout so we can in theory use that route.

ya and he will cost them more than just that pick i think and he's unsigned so thats a heavy price to pay for a players rights who has one great year.

I think Ottawa made it known they were open to move the pick just to see if someone makes a ridiculous offer, but i agree it makes sense for them to keep it and draft another key piece for their future. The atlantic is stacked at the top so not like they will be a playoff team next year unless something crazy happens.
