Title is click-baity...my bad everyone.....trying to find out who doesn't look at the post and will just troll comment.....I know it annoys the DET fans on here and they don't want him.... and it makes sense. Realistically he doesn't fill a team need in DET, nor does he fit with their age group. So I hear ya DET fans, Petry is probably getting traded elsewhere or not at all.

But let's have an honest discussion here about Petry's value (not just with DET fans but with everyone lol).

Petry before this past season was a steady 40+pts offensive Dman for almost 5 years, with his best year being the shortened 2020-21 season where he had 42pts in just 55games (62pts pro rated). In his career with MTL, Petry twice finished with Norris votes (13th place in 2020-21 and 18th place in 2018-19) now this doesn't mean he was a Norris candidate like some fellow Habs fans on here claim, but it does indicate the he was ranked as one of the top 20 Dman in the league for some time, not too shaby.
So when we look at this past season where for the 1st half, and Habs fans should all be conceding here, Petry was terrible (borderline not even an NHL quality player). Was this a sign of him declining, or just a bump in the road? I think this question answers itself when you look at what transpired once Ducharme was fired. If this was truly Petry in decline, a coaching change wouldn't of changed anything or any at least any improvement would have been minimal. but what happened was night and day. Petry had 21pts in his last 28 games with Martin St-louis! Now does this mean any team inquiring on him should ignore that 40 game stretch where he sucked with only 6 pts? not at all! But they can't ignore his recent performances either!

Other significant factors are Petry's age and contract. He will be 35 by then end of this year and still has 3 years left on his deal at $6.25mil per season. This is not good no matter how you slice it. This contract is only justifiable if Petry can maintain he 40+pts production. When you think about it... a 40+pts right shooting Dman at $6.25mil is actually a bargain price....it's combining that with Petry's age that makes his contract a significant risk. Which affects his value significantly.

So if we are being fair and realistic. I think we've established that Petry is not a "cap dump" or "worthless". Far from it. BUT.....If MTL trade him and do not retain any salary or take a bad contract, the value coming back will be minimal (such as a low end 2nd rd pick at best or high end 3rd rd pick + a middle tier prospect).....BUT if MTL do retain salary or take a bad contract OR BOTH, the pendulum will shift and the return will be good (1st rd pick +).

Glad you're joking about Petry. I had another music video ready to go. LOL

Habs shouldn't have a problem trading Petry. I keep thinking of Dallas if Klingberg leaves.

Agree with you on Dallas, other suitors to watch for me are Philly (already rumored) and dark horse Nashville.

Philly for sure. It doesn't look like Ellis is coming back (Injury).

There are also rumors that he requested a trade.

I forgot to include the Pens if Letang leaves

Last I heard the Pens lowballed Letang. I still expect he'll re-sign with the Pens. But Hexy better not be greedy. Tanger is still a points machine. 68 points in 78 games.

Silly Season does get crazy. GM's end up losing their jobs in the aftermath.

All I want is for the Habs to come out with a clear plan, rebuild or go for a cup. I don't really care which path they take (it all hinges on Price though lol) I just want clear direction for the organization (something we have been missing for 10+ years).

Well the rebuild is off to a great start with Shane Wright. Habs just need to stay patient and rebuild properly. Gorton/Hughes should be a good combo in my opinion. Bergy reminded me of Trader Phil Esposito as GM. Trade before you think. LOL

Petry could be easily traded but there are sooooo many factors that dictate the value in a trade for him.

        - Is Petry's family willing to stay in MTL now that covid is less rampant or not?
        - Does he only want to go to teams that are in Michigan's vicinity? Det, Clb, Pitt, etc
        - Would the Habs entertain retention?
        - Are the Habs willing to take back a cap dump player to offset Petry cap a little?
        - Are Habs trying to be competitive next year or rebuild/retooling?

Depending on all these questions, the value can vary greatly. Could be anywhere from Khudobin+3rd to cap dump+1st+prospect. Petry's willingness to stay in MTL is probably the biggest factor in his value. If the Habs aren't forced to move him any more, than the price can be set and negotiated. If he wants out, the Habs are kind of forced to negotiate from a point of weakness which would yield a not great return. Nothing silly bad but nothing Hughes could spin as a win in his favor.

I think he can return 1st + from a team
Like you said, he was Terrible this year, but that's 40 games out of, what? 350 games as a hab, and he finished the year well!
Certainly he can get something, even without retention, he has veteran leadership, and can probably get 40 points next year.
I'm thinking the options are Dallas, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Buffalo
From Dallas, I'd target Dellandrea + Gurianov + Khudobin for Petry + 3rd
Detroit: I'd like Hronek for Petry, but thats probably not possible. Maybe Veleno + 2nd + Berggren for Petry + Poehling + 5th
Pittsburgh: not much options, so, 1st + Poulin for Petry + 4th
Buffalo: Jokiharju, I'd really like to get, amyge package him + philly 2nd for Petry
