Interesting Idea

Created by: Habs_fan31

Description
Just an interesting idea. If the leafs match then you can try the same with Sandin. I see leaf fans are signing liljegren for 1.5x1 or 2. It is an overpay but also a way to throw a wrench in the leafs plans. Important for the habs to bring in another veteran D. Smith may resign with the Canes but you get the idea.

Thoughts?

No team is trading that for Petry

Petry is owed 8mil in signing bonuses over the next three years, has a NMC and is 34. No team with a sane GM is sending a top ten 1st for him. Let alone an already developing "top prospect".

I'm not saying they are. He showed under MSL that he still has it. I can see a GM moving a late first for him. Especially if they have the cap room. If he is moved this summer I think there will be a lot of people surprised, he is still highly valued by many NHL GMs

How do you know many GM's value him highly? I don't doubt he can be a contributor but his age and baggage (nmc, bonuses) are going to lessen the return.

I believe I saw Darren Dreger tweet about it but I could be wrong. I agree his contact will hurt the return but Hughes has said he won't move him unless it makes sense. I think in this case a late first does it.

I can see a contender moving a late 1st but Montreal will have to eat cap back to get it done as contenders are going to be against the cap generally.

Yeah that's fair! I wouldn't be totally against that.

I agree. They could get a late 1st if they retain a good portion

I can just barely imagine us trading the 42nd overall pick for Petry. I'd be surprised, but I wouldn't get my torch and pitchfork out of storage.

Why would a team give up a top 15 pick for Petry? Just sign a UFA at 6m (this year or next) and keep your pick.
Now if Montreal wanted to "gift" Petry to team with cap....maybe that's a deal

laugh First off Petry isn't waiving for Anaheim to be 2,400 miles from home, secondly you're not getting a 1st or top prospect for him this is totally delusional.

@Habs_fan31 don't be discouraged by the outrageous takes on this site. I agree with you, if Hughes doesn't get at least a 1st round pick for Petry I would hope he doesn't move him at all.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/awinninghabit.com/2022/04/26/montreal-canadiens-jeff-petry-heating-just-time-raise-trade-value/amp/

"he has continued to play well throughout the second half of the season. He added two assists in the Habs most recent game, giving him eight points in his last nine games played. Dating back to a couple days after St. Louis took over, Petry has scored 18 points in his last 26 games."

Petry then went on to add 2 G + 1 A over the last 2 games of the season. For 21 pts in his last 28 games, a pace of 60+ pts over 82 games. Recall before Ducharme took over last year that Petry was an early favorite for the Norris (and he still finished 13th in Norris voting), everyone was calling the extension a steal compared to what he would have got free agency. He sucked the entire time under Ducharme basically... and so did every single player on the Habs roster. People are wrongly attributing this poor performance to an age curve with Petry instead of looking at the common theme amongst every hab player that struggled, Dominic Ducharme. Would these same people saying Petry has no value argue Caufield is a bust?

Petry is arguably the most interesting RD this offseason behind Letang and Klingberg (we will see what happens with them). Even if there is no market, Petry has considerably more value to MTL than a return < a 1st round pick.

Again, I suggest you read some comments cause at no point do I suggest the habs only take a top 15 pick. It was largely discussed above smile
