Let the kids play

Created by: Preston_Mattesich
Team: 2022-23 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 8, 2022
Published: Jun. 8, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
how to get back to the playoffs (extremely unrealistic as long as lou is gm)

defense is stacked as is. if dobson can continue to progress and salo/bolduc can take a jump it could carry them the way it did during the two ECF runs.

this center depth goes crazy. all four lines can basically be rolled with almost equal toi.

off topic but imagine this irl team if they protected eberle over bailey, offered lehner a contract, and made cap space without moving toews. the lamorello effect is better seen nowhere but long island.

“Let the kids play” then why would you trade the isles top prospect who has a good shot at making the isles and 2022 1st for a position they don’t need.

raty probably wont play this year for one. although they have center depth, they need more high speed scoring which miller brings to the top 6. by let the kids play, i mean the kids that tore it up with the bottom six minutes they had this year such as wally and bellows. i mention in the description that the lines should pretty much be rolled which is my justification for keeping bellows on the third line.

Lou doesn't trade his guys so I don't think there's a chance Raty gets traded, he had a D+1 seasons similar to Anton Lundell and he was great in his 8 games in the AHL. JT Miller wants between 8 and 9 mill on his next contract. Miller had a career year, its highly unlikely he scores at the same rate on the isles. Nelson has had a lot of success as the isles 2C, it just doesn't make sense to move him to accomadate a declining J.T miller.

Trading that much for JT Miller as a rental is an overpay; doubling down on that overpay by giving him a long-term extension that starts with his age-30 season might be doubling down on that. You've given up what could be the Islanders' two best prospects (assuming that whoever they pick at #13 is better than anyone else in the system other than Raty) and retained 2x$2.5M on Josh Bailey to do that - you're really putting the team in a short term position to maybe be a little better but they're going to have *nothing* in the cupboards to add at the deadline, or to replace the aging guys on a heavily over-30 team.

I can't see Palmieri getting a 1st in that deal - I think you need him to rebuild value this coming season because you're selling him as damaged goods after last season's struggles.

As long as Lou is the GM, I don't see him trading Cizikas. Rumors from last summer had Seattle offering him much more money in terms of AAV but he took the longer term deal to stay on the Island, and Lou doesn't strike me as the type of guy who isn't going to just renege on that one year later.

I might argue that bringing back Chara & Greene in 22-23 would be just as disastrous as relying on Salo & Aho as your LD2/3 this season - Salo probably can be sheltered as LD3 but Aho shouldn't be brought back as anything beyond a 7th D.

The lines are insane. Lee hasnt played C at all in the nhl. Clutter is a very good player for what he does hit people play good d and kill penalties. But a team with cal on the 3rd line isnt a good one. Great 4th liner but his complete lack of offense means he shouldnt be on the 3rd line.
Salo-mayfield is a good d pairing, a good 3rd d pairing. Salo has shown that hes an nhl dman but it was a very small sample size. Mayfield is a good top 4 complimentary dman but cant drive a pair on his own.
How dobson isnt top 4 is beyond me. And aho should not be playing reular minutes. We need a top 4 d for dobson which is probably our biggest need but wasnt addressed.
Also sorokin over varlamov but thats just bc CF put varly first bc his cap hit is higher.

this is just an idea to make the isles competitive again now. the window is closing quick and unless isles fans are okay wasting barzal, pulock, and pelech's prime and waiting at least another 3-5 years to get back to the playoffs, its short term small leaps of faith that need to be taken to win. a lot of times this strategy blows up in a teams face but I think JT and Forsberg still have a few great years of hockey in front of them that justifies these moves. you make a lot of good points though.

messed up, meant to put dobson top 4. also, didn't lee start his career at center? I could be wrong but thats what I thought. lee had a down year in basically every category, he can still be that good player that he was before the injury but i dont think putting him in the bottom six where the lines should basically be rolled anyway is outrageous. and goalies i didnt touch at all so

vancouver doesn't consider the equivalent of two firsts, a third and a solid middle six winger on good salary for a guy who will walk in fa?

The problem is both Forsberg and JT Miller are two of the top regression candidates for next season. Its better to invest $ and assets in younger players who will improve, like Fiala or Puljujarvi

Not if Miller is coming with an extension, he’d easily get a better return.

Past 6 years lees 82 game goal pace
16-17 - 34
17-18 - 40
18-19 - 28
19-20 - 24
20-21 - 36
21-22 - 30
This year was the only one since the injury so i dont see whats wrong. He had a tough 1st part of the year but he really picked it up and was great at the 1 year mark since the injury which is the usual amount of time it takes to recover.
I figured that about the goalies.

Lee had a relatively bad year but I originally thought it was much worse. I went back and checked on some underlying analytics and he ended up finishing the year much better than I remembered. So I give you credit on that, but with that said, I think especially because in this armchair team the lines are pretty much rolled, it wouldn't hurt to experiment with a bottom-six "punisher" line that is led by Lee who can keep a line like that from just being a one-dimensional physical line by bringing in some scoring talent. Just an idea though.

I have to admit, I'm very confused by your logic and outline here. I'm not trying to be negative to a fellow Isles fan but I don't see how any of this work or makes sense. Your trades, what you think Miller and Forsberg would get (you definitely low balled both), the lines you set up.

So i hear the idea my issue though is twofold.
1 - like was said before lee doesnt play C.
2 - nowadys you cant get away with having guys that just hit. The matt martins and ryan reaves' of the world are going out of style. Most guys that play like them can also do something else. For example, clutterbuck and cizikas are both great defensively. That line is a secondary shutdown line (usually goes up against opposing 2nd lines). Or you have guys like lee and josh anderson that have some scoring touch. I feel like this 4th line is very confused. You have a C that will get exposed defensively, but also linemates that dont maximize his scoring ability. It looks to me tbh like a line that was designed to just try and hang on 5v5 and have lee feast on the pp and parise on the top pk.
