Ottawa might have to add beyond the 7th overall pick to get Fiala, the difference there isn't Greig. That deal is a huge L for Ottawa

Same OTT should say no, That contract isn't going to age well and becomes a real problem with Norris, Stuzle, Sanderson, and others who need long-term deals.
As well there will be a top 6 winger available at 7th overall this summer who likely only needs one year in the AHL.

If Dorian can wait that long… seat seems pretty warm

Fiala is a damn good player and is only 25. I don’t think this is a bad contract at all. Cap is likely going up in 2 years so this could be a bargain.

It is if there’s a bidding war and Dorian wants Fiala bad enough. The value is what the current market says it is.

Hopefully, he isn't that dumb to risk the long term for the short term, although there isn't much I wouldn't put past him to try.
If Forsberg comes back at the same level he was playing at the end of the season last year, Sens will be in a playoff hunt. They are going to add a top 6 player somewhere and the rest of the prospects are going to be a year better. Having Pinto for a full season at 3C will make a huge difference as well.

Yeah, agreed. Fiala could blow up in OTT and lead you to a playoff spot this year. He’s damn good and fun to watch. Ridly could be a nobody. Dorian might not be willing to wait any longer and pull the trigger on the known commodity.

On paper is it too much value for Fiala? Who knows, but if Fiala goes to OTT and leads you in scoring and a playoff spot for years, wouldn’t that be a good trade to make? The risk in this deal feels more with MN than OTT IMO.

Mike smith would have to retire and min would need to retain some money. If this was chel I would do it.

M Smith retiring was the assumption. No retention possible here. I’ve seen other Edm trades on here with that deal and it was well received. That’s why I chose Edm for Talbot.

I like Fiala a lot, but he's hardly Ottawa's only option. If the bidding war drives the price above where it makes sense, you don't have to pay it. Also I'm unconvinced that there will be a massive bidding war. Excellent talent, but how many teams will actually be in on him, 5? I've only seen two teams linked so far.

6 teams- OTT, NJD, LAK, NYI, Ducks, Phili. Were listed as potential suitors in Russo’s article. Dorian really likes Fiala, so I could see him just getting it done. If the price is as cheap as some fans want to believe, then there will be even more suitors. But when an offer like this happens, the bidding ends. That’s the point of this trade offer. Unless OTT wanted to swap Pinto for Ridly, but OTT fans I’ve seen on here LOVE Pinto.

Nope. MN has to have money go out if we’re taking Holl. Only way that works for us. We have 8 NHL Dmen already.

Please do! 🙌🏻 I don’t know why but 70-80% of Tor GMs on here have Holl going to MN for a pick. And that just can’t happen, Wild would have to move Kulikov or someone first.

Yeah, we used to want to do that under Chuck Fletcher, but Billy G hasn’t shown any indication he cares about that. If he finds a suitor for Kulikov, maybe he goes after Holl for 3rd pairing RHD. That’s a fit if we clear the cap space and roster spot first.

Fiala would only be 32 by the time that contract was over. He'd only be just going into the downswing of his prime. How is getting all of a player's prime years just as your team is taking the next step and reaching for a playoff spot and ultimately contend during that same timespan not going to age well?

Gaudreau will be 7×$9-10M. Starting at 28 years old.

Forsberg will cost 7×$8-9M. Starting at 27 years old.

Giroux will cost 4-7×$7-8M. Starting at 34 years old.

Fiala will cost 5-8×$7-8M. Starting at 25 years old.

Simply put. Fiala is the youngest option available and costs the least for a player in that tier range. He's well worth the asking price in that regard. He literally carries the least amount of risk, especially in regards to potential drop off, out of any of those options.

Garland and Konecny are cheaper options with term, it's true. But they're also a clear step down in terms of ability and tier level. I don't see either of them moving the needle enough to get the Sens into the playoffs.

Furthermore, there isn't a single prospect at 7th overall that doesn't or isn't going to take at least 2-3 years before hitting the NHL. Not Kemell, not Gauthier, not Lekkerimaki, Yurov, Lambert, or Nazar. Not Savoie or Kasper either.

None of these kids are considered to be particularly close to being NHL ready this year or a year away. With the exception of Wright, Cooley, or Slafkovsky. That's it. Don't count on a prospect being picked there to be anything close to what Fiala is.

the market for Fiala is dropping, not the other way around. Between his playoffs performance, DeBrincat apparently being made available, and there potential for Pastrnak to be available, you're getting farther away from Greig, not closer

Completely disagree. The ask for Cat will be extraordinary. Pasta ain’t available yet, and probably won’t be.

And if he does. He's likely getting delt for the 2nd overall pick and Holtz to NJD.

I think I’d rather keep the third. Try and sign Husso. Run Husso and Skinner. Talbot has played for the oilers before and didn’t like the Canadian media.
