Another draft scenario

Created by: Jacketsman61
Team: 2022-23 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 12, 2022
Published: Jun. 12, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Jackets use FA to get tougher. Zadorov and Delauriers give the younger Jackets some protection against some of tougher teams in the league.

This scenario has the Sabres trading up with the Jackets to get Savoie. Savoie is one of the most gifted offensive players in the draft and would be a player that definitely fits the need of the Sabres. Savoie won’t make it to the Sabres at 9 with Ottawa and Detroit needing offense too. The Jackets get more draft capital to address areas of need and continue restocking the pipeline.

So 9 and 28 for 6. I wouldn't, but I wouldn't be surprised if some Sabres fans would do if one of the right d is there.

There’s plenty of good RD around the Florida pick, just stay where u are and increase your chances .

Why in the hell would you pay a late first and a fourth to move up only two spots? There couldn’t be that much of a drop off between seven and nine. I’m not saying they won’t consider moving up, but let’s just see how the draft shakes out. If their guy is still on the board they might not have to. I imagine they are probably targeting two or three possibilities, and one of them will likely make it to 9.

Buffalo isn’t interested at that price to move from 9 to 6.

It would depend really. It is a steep price for sure but if Sabres management believes Savoie is clearly the best player for them, then yeah you could see it. Remember, the Sabres still have the 15OA to select a defenseman which there should be a plethora of them at that spot. It is just a scenario. Not saying it would happen but you can make the argument if Savoie is clearly the player they want at that spot.

The Jackets are a team that could take the best player available regardless of position. Because of that if certain teams believe that teams like Ottawa or Detroit will get the player they want Columbus is an attractive team to trade with. Jarmo generally doesn’t deal cheaply so it wouldn’t shock me if it were a deal similar to this. But if the Jackets did move down to 9 I could see the Jackets interested in Kasper, Geekie, or even Nazar

If Jiricek isn't there at 6 I don't mind a trade down. Savoie theoretically does fit our team as well, but I like Nazar a lot and 9 feels like he could be had there. I've heard talks of Gauthier but don't think he meshes with our core particularly well. If Nazar/Savoie are gone at 9 though he feels like a good consolation prize. Then we have 12 to go for a risky pick (Mirosnichenko, Yurov, Lambert) or D (Mateychuk, Mintyukov) or a big center type (Geekie, Yurov). Having something around 28 to get an Ostlund or Ohgren or Chesley or even Miroschnichenko there.

Jarmo is also staunch BPA so we would have to see. Hard to see him trading out of a high pick given we need higher end talent more than we need quantity, but maybe he can get both.

Columbus is closer to contention than people think. I really don't see them trading down for additional picks at this point when the farm system is loaded, and the top guys are already vying for NHL spots that aren't there. If any draft day trades happen, they have to be moving out and consolidating assets to get better, not continuing to add long-term assets.
