Description
There's a lot that's going on here, but let me explain:

There's not many worlds where Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Rickard Rakell all resign, so we're forced to make some choices. Rakell earned his payday, and his age is justifiable for a long term extension, and Letang is needed to keep the defense core relatively in fact. Therefore, Geno has to go. Rodrigues also resigns, and having ended the year cold, we get a pretty decent deal.

Some other smaller signings are made for depth, including taking a gamble on Will Butcher regaining his rookie status, and adding Edler for some solid defensive depth. Similarly, Ennis is a boost to the bottom six. Beyond that, we get DeSmith and Boyle back.

The big move is Vincent Trocheck. We all know he's been underrated throughout his career, and he might just ask for a bit more than this deal, but I'd like to think we could talk him down a bit. He'd be an amazing #2 behind Sid.

On the trade market, they're pretty quiet. While it hurts to trade Carter, we need the space for Trocheck, and the oilers love older players, and so he will fit in well as decent depth. Pettersson can sort of be traded anywhere, I just figured Buffalo was a decent spot for a younger guy. If Pens fans don't like the returns, I get it. The reason for this is because everyone knows the status we're in, and while they're not desperate enough to need to pay somebody to take them on, it definitely hurts their value.

What are your thoughts?? Who did I overvalue? Who did I undervalue?

I know lotta Sabres fans will disagree because theyve seen maybe 2 mins of pettersson, but I like the deal for the Sabres. Moneypuck had him spending some time at RHD, is that legit? Either way I think its a good value add especially if they keep Dahlin on his right side.

Edit: I think you're stuck with Carter though

He can, but shouldn't be viewed as a top option for that by any means. In regards to Carter, I think that he's regarded highly enough someone could bite.

I was thinking maybe to play next to power for a bit.

That extra year on carter's deal is what makes it tough, especially given where his on ice impact has gone lately. I think you'd have to give someone a pick.

I also wonder if it's a move too similar to Bishop's (ofc different context where it's LTIR vs still playing) where there's just a 6th or 7th moved with Carter. Either way I'm willing to pay a bit if it gets us Tro.

At that cost, take him. You would get at least that back at the deadline, not much risk. Plus it keeps Bryson as the 6/7.

I like your rationale.
Too many Sabre ACGM's cannot see beyond today.
Pettersson looked solid in the playoffs, no reason to expect any difference playing for Buffalo.

Rodrigues $3.33Mx3
Rodrigues is a $1.5M-ish per level player. If he wants more then he can go elsewhere.

Pettersson for 5th, 7th
Pettersson can get a 2nd, specifically from Detroit

Carter for 4th
They didn't just extend him and give him a full NMC to trade him before the season even starts.

What everyone else said about Carter, plus Edmonton has no cap space anyhow.

Buffalo declines, no interest in an overpaid mediocre Dman under contract for too many years

Neither of those make him overpaid, mediocre or under contract for too many years. He's played the right side and his defensive numbers have been strong for a while now. If they can get him for a 3rd or 4th rounder its an absolute slam dunk.
