This would be an absolute fleecing for Ottawa. I'm really hoping the market gets hot this off season

Ehhh, Pulijarvi is probably only a middle six forward at best now and Keith wouldn't have guareented playing time plus his NTC would block that trade.

The goalie market is going to be red hot. There are maybe 5 or 6 UFA goalies who can play 25+ games reliably, and maybe 1 real starter. Not all will make it to free agency.

This trade doesn't make sense. Edmonton won't want 2 years of Murray while only dumping one year of Keith. Keith won't waive to go to Ottawa. Additionally, Ottawa should not be getting the value (Puljujarvi for a 3rd) when they are the ones benefiting more from this trade.

Here is a deal that makes sense for everyone.

Edmonton sends Ottawa Keith+Kassian for Murray. Ottawa guys out Keith. Keith re-signs in Edmonton. (There is precedence for this with Orpik re-signing in Washington after being traded to Colorado and bought out.)

The Keith buyout will cost Ottawa 2.5M in real dollars (2 this year, 500k next year).

Kassian will cost Ottawa 5.8M (3.5 this year, 2.3 next year).

In total, Ottawa saves 6.7M for Murray, who is a sunk cost. As bad as Kassian is, they are likely to perceive him as valuable to their bottom 6 in a situation where it doesn't cost them money.

Edmonton re-signs Keith for 1M which makes him whole. They shed 7.8M in cap this season and 3.5M next season. This gives them a 1.55M cap surplus this season and Murray costs them 2.75M next season. They also have the option of buying out Murray in 2023 if he doesn't bounce back, which will lower their cap burden even more.

Win/win for both sides. Ottawa gets rid of Murray, which they likely want to do, and adds a veteran pugilist while shedding salary. Edmonton gets Murray at a cost very close to cap neutral.

With goaltending being the Achilles heel for Edmo, they are not going to risk going into the season with Murray.
