Immediate and easy "no" from the Jackets. More than one asset in return for Jenner means either it's not worth it, or it's so absurd that the Leafs wouldn't do it.

Certainly a no on that CBJ trade and pretty much any other proposal the Leafs could come up with to get Jenner.

Possibly.... Nylander extends the career of backstrom ovi kuzy 70 point player for 40 points.... and yes you're losing his checking etc. you need to give something to get something..... id be fine switching out samsonov for vitek but your guys arent keeping both so the trade can be re worked.

Every trade is terrible, you’re way off on the contracts, and you’re over the cap. Otherwise, great job!

Backstrom’s career is likely over. Anyway, I’m just gonna dust off my old explanation for why deals around Wilson and Nylander don’t work.

Wilson is not on the block. The Caps main issues are that they're slow and they have a lot of guys who are prone to lapses in concentration and losing their assignments defensively. Wilson is the fastest and most defensively consistent winger in the Caps' top 6. He's also beloved in the locker room as far as us fans can tell, and the odds-on favorite to take over the C when Ovie retires. Wilson is not part of the problem, and trading him for Nylander doesn't address the Caps' problems.

Nylander's also just a bad fit for the Caps. I don't know if Nylander's comfortable at RW, but if not it leaves the Caps very unbalanced with Nylander joining Ovie, Mantha, and Sheary on the left side while only Oshie and Hathaway naturally play on the right. The bigger issue though is that he's also a bad fit for the Caps powerplay. They run a very rigid 1-3-1 where each spot has to have a specific handedness and skillset, and the only spot he's a fit for is Ovie's. Ovie plays at least 3/4 of every powerplay (check out his PPTOI/g, it's first in the NHL by 46 seconds), so Nylander's production would take a massive hit going from Toronto's PP1 to Washington's PP2. He's probably a 50 point player in DC, and that's what Wilson's already providing.

The Leafs aren't a good trading partner for the Caps in general. The Caps' needs are a proven starting goalie, a top 6 winger who's either a left shot or doesn't need PP time to be productive, and a Backstrom replacement if his injuries are gonna keep him out all year. The only Leafs who'd fill needs for the Caps are Matthews and Tavares (no, Kerfoot is not the caliber of player they'd be looking for), and they're obviously not going anywhere. The only way the Leafs get Wilson is if they offer a massive overpay, cause there's no "win-win" deal to be made here.

That’s 850K over with 21 guys on the roster. Teams almost always carry 22 or 23 in order to have a spare F and D, so add another 750K for a 7th defenseman. That’s a significant overage, and you underpaid Marchment and Liljegren by 3-4M combined. You’re not “taxi squad-ing” your way out of this.

Tavares has a full NMC and he’s playing for his childhood team. You could offer him up for free and it wouldn’t matter cause he wouldn’t waive to come here.

This isn't fanboy glasses, you walnut. This is reality. A team that just signed its heart-and-soul captain to a four year extension isn't going to trade him right as it kicks in. That's not how the league works. Everyone in a vacuum is tradeable, sure, but sometimes players mean more to their teams than numbers on a spreadsheet. I know a Leafs fan can't relate to that, and for that I'm sorry for you.
