Description
In all reality considering the contracts coming up and the cost of his deal, it would only make sense for the Rangers to try and get Panarin off the team to not only make cap space, but to open up spots in the top 6 for the kids. If you keep him and go into next season without and big signings and your looking at around $13 Million in cap space to sign Laf, Miller, and Chytil. Not to mention the other holes that will need to be filled. You are not going to be able to put out a balanced line up when you are committing over half the salary on 5 Players. (Mika, Kreider, Fox, Trouba and Panarin). Recoup some assets that have been spent over the past season bring in a top six winger (who doesn't cost over 6.5 Million) and build out the bottom 6. Create a more balanced team with money to pay the kids next off season.

Instead of trading for Panarin and giving up that second over pick, Jersey could sign Gaudreau for Panarin 's cap and keep the second overall.
This is the problem of trading high cap players for futures. The few teams that have cap and could make this type of trade, just sign UFA and keep their young , cheap assets.

Let's look beyond trading Panarin to a rival and the return of the trade.

The cap freed up just went back into wingers. Yes, it's because you assumed you can get a cheap C, in Wright but based off Lafreniere and Kakko's experience, it's not a stretch to think he won't be super impactful as the 3C, and Chytil is probably not ready to be the 2C.

You can spend half the cap on 5 guys if there is least a center, a D-man, and you have an elite goalie and all 5 players are effective.
