For a rental Kane making 5.25, not only do the Canes not have the cap, I wouldn't do Necas in any deal for Kane right now. I'd unload any prospect (not named Morrow) and the draft, but I think Necas right now is untouchable. At a cost control rate, he is the emergency plan if KK doesn't work at 2C. I think that piece is a non-starter here. If you'd have told me 3 years ago, I'd be saying the Canes have a piece that is a non-starter for Patty Kane, I'd have checked you into a mental asylum, and I'm not convinced I'm not about to check myself into one, but alas, here we are.

Any rumors floating around Hurricane land about what Necas might be asking for his new contract?

Question for Chicago fans: does Seth jones really want to stay if they are rebuilding for 5 more years? Like, debrincat, and Dach leaving may have been to drive Kane and Toews to waive, but Jones is still in his prime, and won't be by the time the rebuild is over. You would have to assume they would move him as well.

I don't think CHI would accept it being only a 3rd.

Yes very valid. Gunler + Koivunen/Bokk + 23' 1st would probably get it done also tbh at the TDL.

I don't think he would want to stay, but he's got paid so for me at least he should be staying. At least for the next few years, plus we need his contract to hit the floor once Kane and Toews come off the books and the cap increases.

It's been very quiet on his ask. I think he wants a chance at 2C and the team would rather go KK 2C. I know Necas was supposed to be a major piece in the Canes push for Tkachuk, but they seem to be worlds apart on a contract, and a lot of people are saying its going to take something dumb, like a Tkachuk, to get him.

If its at the deadline, I'd do something like Gunler + 2023 2nd + Bokk. But if Gunler's involved, I wouldn't do a 1st. Dude fell to us in the 2nd round because of a supposed attitude problem. In himself, he should have been a 1st rounder. He's got a disgusting shot, and he's coming over to Chicago this year (Wolves, not Hawks, obviously. I'm only elaborating because someone will have that brainfreeze moment)

I couldn't fathom the Hawks not getting a 1st for Kane @ 50% retained. Unless the prospect was unreal (top prospect), id be as disappointed as I was with the Cat move....

In a normal year, I'd get that. However, salary cap is more valuable right now than almost any NHL player. Look at Pacioretty (a multiple time 30+ goal scorer) having to be moved with a young defenseman (Coghlan) to clear cap. Even someone as good as Kane may not net a return that promising at the deadline.

at the TDL the cap becomes less relevant and easier to manoeuvre and handle an incoming cap hit of a Kane 50% or even 25% if another team holds cap. I should have added Gardiner in the OP to assist with the cap but was an oversight on my behalf due to whats distracting me currently.

Hopefully, if they want out at the TDL, there is some desperation going on with other teams enough to get a decent haul. We could be looking at a Giroux type of return, which isn't bad but also isn't great. All in all, if we can get one or two more 1st round picks in the 2023 draft, CHI's prospect pool should be looking A LOT better. And that should go a long way to restore some hope for the hawks and their fans. Not gonna lie though, there is a big part of me that would love to see Kane and Toews retire as Blackhawks.

That doesn't make this much easier. Carolina would still have to go and get a new LD. Cap is still tight. With a lot of teams planning to operate in LTIR, cap space won't accrue for a lot of teams. I think selling right now is going to be very difficult. Being paid to eat bad deals is probably the way to go.

We are primed to eat bad deals for the next few years. We need to weaponise the cap space we are afforded.

Weaponizing it now is when it makes the most sense. With the cap projected to go up by as much as 10 mil in the next 2 years, cap space is going to become a lot less valuable.

Yep a lot of teams hard up against the cap. This is the season management have targeted and this draft year in particular.

The cap is not projected to increase by 10M. NHLPA director Donald Fehr told Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet that it is a “reasonable bet” that the escrow debt will be paid off by the end of the 2024-25 season. If they do, it would almost certainly trigger a significant cap jump.

When Seravalli first projected out the cap numbers for the next few years, that jump was just under $6MM, to a total of $91.4MM. Remember though, that was for the 2026-27 season, meaning if the escrow is paid off a year earlier, it will come in a little under that number.

For now, the league is still limited to $1MM increases. Next season will have a cap ceiling of $82.5MM, 2023-24 is expected to be $83.5MM, and 2024-25 will have an $84.5MM.

Allan Walsh (Player agent) confirmed on his podcast that he negotiates with GM's expecting the cap to have exceeded 90 million by 2025-26 as the TV Revenue starts flowing back in, the expansion fees from Seattle start to filter through. There's expected to be a huge spike by GM and Agents. Or so is the belief of agents and GMs

Yeah, I saw his interview. I agree with his statements about the TV deals. However, the notion that the cap system should be removed completely is short sighted. There is no market mechanism to reduce inflated salaries in the NHL without it. Maybe you can argue that it is too low, relative to revenues, but it evens the playing field. The NHL is much more competitive than it was in the 90s.
