From an Isles perspective we don’t want to trade Barzal for futures, and from a Van perspective that is a lot to give up, basically Beau, Wahlstrom, Raty, 2 2nds.

It’s not that the package is bad, but Isles should not be trading their top forward, basically face of the franchise unless they are getting a young 1C or crazy elite pieces back.

I’ve been reading this whole thread with some popcorn but just thought I’d jump in here: Barzal doesn’t kill penalties because the isles have much better defensive centers in Pageau and Cizikas. Barzal is probably capable of being on the PK though

They were in the lottery technically. Before that they had a high end defense that made up for their wingers. But the roster is getting older like we all know. And trotz’s voice was clearly not welcome in that room anymore.

We have had great goaltending and defense, and just enough depth scoring to succeed. If Barzal was given better line mates (not leo Komarov) I have no doubt we would have beaten Tampa in at least one of the conference finals and then went on to win the cup. Worst linemates in the league is a stretch though, because Anders Lee and Jordan Eberle (his normal linemates during those seasons) are solid players, just not top line guys.
