My take on what might happen

Initial Creation Date: Aug. 18, 2022
Published: Aug. 18, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Toronto isn't able to get Sandin signed, my guess is that leaves the door open for Holl to stay and Sandin to be flipped for a young forward who can help out on the second line left wing.
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. 2023 5th round pick (SEA)
2.
TOR
  1. Comtois, Maxime
Additional Details:
Would this make sense at all? Doesn't necessarily have to be Comtois but just a youngish player similar calibar to him

clifford and anderson are your 12th-13th forwards and mete is your 7th dman? Oooof.

I think Comtois has a bit more value than an RFA holding out (without arb rights). Comtois at 146 games is almost a .5ppg player whereas Sandin is coming off a career season of 51 games. I think TOR would have to add, a bit, maybe a 3rd?

Sandin could be a top 4 dman, but he isnt yet, so I dont think TOR can get a young quality (and cheap) top 6 winger for his rights.

Its also about youth in the TOR system, they dont have any defensemen close to NHL caliber at this point, (and with muzzin, brodie, giordano, benn: thats ALOT of age) so losing a Sandin is far worse than say a Hirvonen, Amirov....

I’d say the Leafs have officially zero leverage in a trade.

Ya you might be right it might have to be for a lower quality forward than what Comtois is. And yes the leafs don't have many young defenseman but they also don't have a ton of young forwards. Amirov is unknown and Robertson isn't suddenly going to turn into a top six forward. They have Niemela and Lidjegren on the back end and Knies upfront that look to be promising players.

Also this would provide a bit of assurance if they aren't able to resign bunting next offseason

Your premise for the Anaheim trade is a good one. The Ducks would probably be willing to trade Max Jones for Sandin.

True, their prospect pool is small and weak all around and Niemala and Knies didnt/havent had the best WJC. Niemala is playing well so far, but very smallish and not very physical and is a few yrs away at best. (not dissimilar to Andrae from SWE, who's having a monster WJC) I think theres promise, but I think alot of fans need to have hope and realistic expectations that Knies becomes a good middle six winger and not expect the next marner or nylander or that niemala can add some size and familiarity on the smaller NHL rink. TOR cant afford a 3 yr wait for another youngster on defense, with the age they have back there.

I agree with you though, that an unsigned Sandin doesn;t get back a young, cheap, solid top 6 forward. What Sandin has still, is promise and a good chance to be a top 4 dman, but its still just promise and its still an unsigned (possibly difficult) promise.

As much as Toronto cant really give up a young dman, the value is difficult. Another ACGM had gabriel vilardi and a middle round pick from LA, which is maybe closer in value (a 23 yr old with pedigree who has perfomed okay-good in the NHL in limited stints), but similarly no sure thing in a top 6 role yet.

On the upside, even though he has a limited market because of cap/etc... I think kerfoot gets better than a 5th, even from a SEA, who hope that he performs on a lessser team, stays healthy, and they can flip him for a higher round pick, maybe a 4th and 6th something...

We have no reason to deal Comtois after last season and if we are looking for a LD, Nic Hague is a perfect fit

If Ducks were interested in Sandin, they’d just offersheet him. Not trade Comtois for him.

I highly doubt anyone would offersheet him. It never happens, that would completely ruin anaheims relationship with Toronto likely for a very long time

Maybe but ANA has picks and to be fair, its only a 2nd rounder even with Sandin at 3.75mil (way too much).

I think the ‘definitely not’ went too far. But the biggest reason is the ducks thinnest position is LW when it comes to young talent and we have a ton at LD. We have Fowler at LD for 4 years, and then Mintyukov, Zellweger, and another like 3 solid D prospects behind them on the left side. If Sandin played RD, it’d be much more interesting.

Also, selling Comtois at an all time low in value when he led us in scoring just a year ago isn’t the move. I’d gladly trade for Sandin. But for me it’d be l more like a 2nd rounder or maybe Tracey/Pastujov and a pick

Like I said, it’s not likely a trade or offersheet isn’t likely. Ducks would probably target Hauge before Sandin
