I think Jones and Nurse can still earn their money. I know it's a huge cap hit, but both guys are great defenseman. Unfortunately Seth Jones happened to get traded to terrible team and probably won't look as good for a while.
Nurse is probably overpaid by 1.8 million or so, but he's also Edmonton's best defenseman and a huge part of their locker room and off ice culture. But I get where you're coming from.

Would not have Martinez and Petry here. McCabe had a bad year but he could bounce back. Moore has one year left on his deal. Would replace these four by Ristolainen, Zaitsev, Gudbranson, Ekman-Larsson/Savard.

Nurse is pretty bad in his own zone there is no way he should be in the top 10 paid Dmen

I disagree with Doughty and Martinez, when they are healthy they are great for them teams.... i still can see worse contracts, where is Ekman-Larsson, Ristolainen, Gudbranson, Zaitsev and Nemeth

I think they both only deserve like a 6.5-7 mil cap hit apiece

How is Karlsson not number 1 worst? Highest paid with 5 more years. Extremely unproductive!

Doughty should still be here he’s being paid like he’s a Norris caliber defensemen, yet he hasn’t been that since 2017 and he didn’t deserve his one Norris win should’ve gone to Karlsson

As a Jets fan I wonder if Morrissey shouldn't be on here, good player but not sure he's really worth $6.25M and he's got a lot of years left on his deal.

Could maybe have Schmidt on this list too.

Nurse had a very good defensive season analytically and plays the most minutes against the hardest competition in the league...

I think Vlasic is #1. The other guys ahead of him are overpaid but still youngish and useful.

Also Risto needs to be here.

Using the player cards from The Athletic (Luszczyszyn), I took their calculated market value minus their AAV from Capfriendly, so positive is outperforming their contract and negative is underperforming.

-7.1 Vlasic (market value of -0.1 in an update)
-5.3 Chiarot (market value of -0.5 in an update)
-3.8 Karlsson
-3.7 Jones
-3.1 Nurse
-2.7 Doughty
-1.8 McCabe
-1.5 Petry
+0.3 Martinez
N/A Moore

Some others:
-4.6 Werenski ( Luszczyszyn mentions him in an article)
-3.8 Ristolainen
-2.3 Parayko
-1.8 Schmidt
-1.6 OEL
-0.1 Morrissey

Edit: fixed the explanation

Nurse is a tough one. Ya he might have a spot on this list but right now I'd consider an honorable mention because he hasn't played a single shift under that contract yet and has wildly out preformed every contract he's had thus far. Plays a ton of minutes 5-5 and pk all the hard minutes for Edmonton does alot of the heavy lifting. Its yet to be seen how much of an overpay it really is especially considering his most recent viewings is with a busted up hip limiting his most useful traits in mobility.

Petry is probably recency bias. In the shortened season he had Norris votes. Last year there wasn't a single player other than Lehkonen while he was there and maybe Suzuki who didn't underperform.

Nurse also is #1 in the league for 5v5 goals over the past 2 seasons and #2 in the league in TOI/GP at 5v5. I'd rather he was making $8M, but to call his one of the worst contracts in the league is stunningly idiotic.

That was his first season in the Positives analytically, mostly because Keith was there to take a huge load off him, there is no way he should be making more then Makar

so you have to come with a small niche stat to say he is #1 in something, Nurse shouldn't be making anywhere near Makar's money, it's a bad deal at most he is a 5 mill dman

i don't really trust Dom's model with contracts as it had Suzki as on one of the worst contracts

He does acknowledge the shortcoming, "The model spits out this result because Suzuki is not currently an $8 million player. He’s not close either and there’s a lot more risk now with his deal. With the deal being eight years long, the yearly negative surplus also compounds. With that being said, it would be an absolute shock to see him anywhere close to this list next season. He’s a talent worth betting on, even if the odds lowered after last season."

I think its a good place to start from in looking at comparing players at one point in time. Maybe there is another public model out there that tries to do the same thing that would be worth comparing results to.

LOL, that's a ridiculous comparison. Makar is underpaid, his contract is mostly RFA years and he didn't even have arbitration right when he signed it. Nurse's contract is 100% UFA years.

Your position that Nurse is only worth $5M is laughable, he's a legit 1st pair defenseman and those guys don't go for $5M as UFA's.

Also: goals and TOI aren't "niche stats". tears of joy
