My Top 10 Every Position

Created by: UpsideDownQue

Description
Some really tough calls. I think in general tier rankings are better than list rankings cause there isnt an arbitrary cutoff after 10 players. In some cases there were guys from 8-15ish who are all interchangeable, but I tried my best to choose just 10 for each position. I also might be forgetting some guys

Do not disrespect Sidney Crosby.

Hes top 7 how is that disrespectful? Hes in the same tier as Barkov, Stamkos, and Bergeron in that 5-8 range

Having him in the same tier as Oettinger is really bad. Oettinger had a good playoff series, but he was nowhere near as good in the regular season

Yea maybe drop Oettinger down a tier then (though if you combine his playoff and reg season GSAx it actually outperformed Demko last year, but to be fair Demko also put up an elite 4 game playoff series a couple years back too). Either way l still think theres too much separation between the 2nd tier guys and Demko though

Offensively yes, defensively no

Nurse isn't even good defensively though. Yost did an article about him. When McDavid's on the ice, he's elite, when he isn't he's below average. McDavid is the one who does it all

One good season is inflate GSAx by a lot. Tell me what Demko's GSAx against Vegas in the bubble run was. He played 3 and a half games and was insane

If you are referring to this article: https://www.tsn.ca/travis-yost-darnell-nurse-looks-like-two-different-players-on-any-given-night-1.1602359

Its a bit outdated, looks like it was using data from 20-21. Nurse had pretty poor defensive numbers (yet still better than Rielly's) prior to 21-22 but actually looked solid defensively last season. Rielly has just been terrible defensively his whole career. Using 5v5 RelTM xGA/60 which essentially accounts for impacts of teammates (like you were saying with McDavid and Draisaitl) to attempt to isolate a single player's impact on xGA rates (this is a good explanation on how "relative to teammates" calculations work if youre interested: https://hockey-graphs.com/2018/02/21/revisiting-relative-shot-metrics-part-1/), Nurse was even while Rielly was at +0.29 xGA/60 (positive is a bad thing in this context - more goals against). Going by RelTM xGF/60 and RelTM xGA/60, all of Rielly's offensive impacts on xG at 5v5 are negated by even worse defensive play

Heres a comparison of their last 4 seasons. I guess we will see next year if Nurse's defensive turnaround is here to stay or if it was just a flash in the pan

I edited my comment^ Youre right Demko was also good in a playoff run. If anything I would drop Oettinger down a tier to create separation between him and Demko, not move Demko up

I like the fact that you have Brodin on there, he is otherwise somewhat underrated imo.
Great and fun list in general I feel 👍
Only change I would care to argue for is that Kyle Connor should for sure be up there somewhere, definitely ahead of Robertson for example. I mean Connor is one of the most reliable goal scorers out there for the past 4 seasons, and fast as lightning and exciting to watch 🙂

I would not go as far as Connor beeing terrible, not the greatest defensive talent for sure.
However, I wouldn't exactly say that defensive prowess is the common denominator among the forwards on this list though.

No way DeBrincat is better than Huberdeau and Ovechkin (at least in the recent past)

Chabot is better than Weegar and Nurse. And like others have mentioned, Rielly needs to be ranked.

Im pretty flexible on the order of LWs from 4-8. I just put Huberdeau, Panarin, and Ovechkin near the bottom of that tier since their defense is considerably weaker than the other LWs on that list. DeBrincats offense hasnt been on the same level as those guys but his defense brings him up imo

I wouldnt put Chabot over Weegar but maybe over Nurse and Werenski - again those guys are all interchangeable, theyre in the same tier for me so I was kind of splitting hairs to put them in order
