Description
Since we are back to seeing Damon Severson trades again, I thought I'd try to put together a few trade comps. Some of the teams may not fit, but hopefully the comps match up. These are for fun, but can also be useful. Let me know what you think.

Additional Details:
Note: Not the perfect comp since Habs aren't buyers. Also, Matheson is a bit older than Matt Carle, who was 23 and one-season removed from leading rookie dmen in scoring. But his contract was similar % of cap as Matheson's and was seen as an underperfomer in 2007-08. He was eventually flipped to Philly, where he had his most notable seasons. Wishart was a 6'4" 225 lb defensive LHD taken 16th overall in 2006 draft and had been putting up some points in WHL in his D+1 and D+2 seasons.

Comps from more than two years ago aren't really relevent unless it's a franchise type player since they are traded so rarely. The league has changed a lot mostly due to the cap and the market in general changes year to year and even month to month.

The Manson trade might be the best comparable. I think Lindholm is viewed as a better player and there was a strong possibility of him re-signing in ANA.

It's a bad comp. Not realistic imo.
A better one would be the Manson trade. Helleson + 2nd.

Severson is a heck of a lot closer to Hampus Lindholm than Josh Manson

But appreciate that you are adding another comp to consider

Isn't it fun how many people jump all over you on this site rather than taking 30 seconds to read the explanation?

Most of these comp are a bit out dated but still provide good context.

Lindholm comp is solid for the high end return if a team really likes Severson and basically has an extension in place for him.

The Witt and Campbell comps are outdated but still provides what would be a reasonable expectation for a return. Good prospect + 1st.

As others have mentioned, the Manson trade last year (helleson + 2nd) is probably a good comp for the low end of what they'd get in a return.

Basically this shows the return could reasonably be anywhere from: 2nd + solid prospect to 1st + 2 2nds + decent change of scenery prospect + cap dump. With the former being a bit underwhelming and the latter being a homerun.

These are comps. Not asking prices. (It says it there in the title). They are intended to give a range of prices that could mimic a market. In other words, these are not the answer to “what do we need to pay” but are more an answer to “what could other teams be paying”. Comps. Like when you buy a house.

So for instance, if you are the GM of a team in need of a player like Severson, and you want to know what a competitive bid would look like, you’d want your AGM to assemble a list of comps. It doesn’t mean all those teams are bidding. And since players aren’t really sold via auction, there is no market information about bid vs ask prices. So your AGM makes up a list like this. And if it’s accurate, you’d have a rough idea of what type of offers Tom Fitzgerald is receiving from your competition. Some good, some bad.

    Does that make sense?

These are not comps, like buying a house, you're comparing a basement condo on skid row to prime San Fran real estate.

Guhle and Matheson > Wishart and Carle

Zaitsev and Bernad-Docker > Moore and Vaakanainen

Your 1st rd picks are coming from teams that would be significantly worse than the respective picks in the comps, so not factoring in that automatic jump of 5-10 spots in the first round is an oversight.

Then there's the comparing of Severson, a one dimensional RD to Boyle, Campbell, Faulk, and Lindholm, all who bring so much more than offense from the right side.

Yeah, you're probably right. Devils would probably have to pay to dump this one-dimensional skid row of a player.

    a bit cynical are we?

Not a cap dump, but definitely not Dan Boyle either.

I think he gets a late 1st and B-Level prospect.

Another thing to factor, how many offensive D will be available at the TDL, Gostisbhere, Klingberg, Shattenkirk, and maybe Dumba (depending where the Wild are)

Ghost is almost a true comp as a rental as Severson, would you trade any of that above for Ghost? probably not.

Remember, Severson's projected WAR % is 59.... 62% EV defence, he's not some stud.

    Ghost. Strong comp.

So Devils give a 2nd and a 7th to move Severson contract.

    Brilliant.

Love it when homers overvalue their players.... just ask for McDavid and Matthews in a 3 team deal with salary retention while you're at.

Severson is so good, the NHL will let him play for 2 teams simultaneously.

Saying NJD gets a positive return for Severson makes me a homer who overvalues his players, I guess.

    2 firsts + 2 seconds for Severson ???

    NO THANKS

I can also 100% guarantee that Habs fans wouldn't trade Guhle for Severson either

These are comps, but no one reads anymore.

And Habs fans have made clear that Severson has negative value (and Josh Anderson > Nemec).

Comps or offers, I don't see the point

But you're right about the 2nd point, lol I shouldn't have said "Habs fans"

This is an interesting concept for Washington, but I think there may be a better comp from DC than the Witt trade. Seems like it’s lower value from Washington than what’s realistic, and I would instead look to comp it to the Shattenkirk trade.

Both are decent RD options that can play an offensive game, have a year left on affordable deals, and in my opinion, are risky plays in a different defensive system (which we saw with Shattenkirk struggling to do anything productive during his short stay in DC)

I’d give the current comp as Borgstrom (Sanford), 1st, 2nd, and McIlrath (Brad Malone), for Severson (Shattenkirk) and Schmid (Copley), unless Schmid carries more value than I think, in which a different depth goalie could work instead.

I have used the Shattenkirk trade as well for a comp. That’s a good one. The whole point to show a range of possible prices (you’d be surprised at the wide range of offers for him we see on here).
