Detroit declines. We're rebuilding. Not loading up for a playoff run. Stevie drafted Soderblom in the 6th round. We'll keep the picks.

Well that's just shortsighted business - if you get Marcus Foligno for a 4th and 5th, you take it and flip him for a profit.

That's well below his value.

Well your post really doesn't make any sense at all. There's no middle man needed. Wild would just trade Foligno to a team who isn't rebuilding. Not to a team who is inserting young players like Soderblom and Berggren into the lineup. Most hockey fans know this. Not you though.

Of course there's no middle man, MN would never make this trade to begin with. It's horrible. But that doesn't matter in the context of what you said.

I don't need a Toyota Tacoma, but if someone offers me one for 10 grand, you bet I'm buying.

The name of the game is asset management - buying low is always good business. Most hockey fans know this.

The Kings aren't giving up anything of value for a goaltender that's older than Jonathan Quick.

You sound like my girlfriend. She's a coupon shopper. One time she came home from Target with a 24 pack of greek yogurt. She was able to stack coupons and got it for 90% off. Paid $3 for $30 worth of yogurt. Only one problem, she's lactose intolerant and ended up throwing it all in the garbage after it expired a few weeks later. $3 set on fire.

And in your story, there'd be 15 GMs asking your girlfriend if they can buy that yogurt off her for $15.

Foligno for a 4th and 5th is an absolute no-brainer snap accept.

He never even has to play a game for the team, if they don't want. His value is so far above that, you'd be able to flip him the same day.

ill give them a 1st for Foligno. rebuild or not, only really (Jason) bad (Botterill) GMs would consider trading a player like that, and the fan base that loses that player will regret it for years (Hello)

The value is irrelevant, there's not a fit and if he has higher value, he'll go for higher value... somewhere else. Do you think GMs just make ONE call and either it goes through or it doesn't? Also. flipping players is not a thing, this isn't a video game.

I'm aware of that, but that's an entirely different argument and not what we're talking about.

You're saying Detroit declines because it obviously would cost more, and thus they're not willing to part with the actual assets required to attain Foligno. I agree with that. Makes total sense, no issue there.

Saying Detroit declines because they "got Soderblom in the 6th" and want their 4th and 5th is different.

You're conflating two different things.

Whoever made this proposal is trolling. Minnesota wouldn't move foligno much less for this bad proposal. Marc Andre Fleury is going nowhere also. Such a Unrealistic proposal

And Guerin wouldn't consider moving foligno. He has turned down a 1st round pick before when Minnesota was bad

Agreed. I don't see a world where Merrill somehow has that much more value than Foligno. This is the type of return I would only expect if something crazy happened like Foligno banged Guerin's wife and Guerin just wanted Moose out of town ASAP.

I can think of one idiot GM that worked exactly that way. Paul Fenton was dead set on getting Fiala so he didn't even make Granlund available to other teams. Our beat writer was told by multiple GMs after the fact that they would have been in on Granlund and likely offered more. He was also so trigger happy to move Nino that he blindly said yes to a deal for Rask when Carolina called and didn't do any scouting on him despite the fact that the call happened during our team's scouting meetings.
