Initial Creation Date: Dec. 10, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Domi, Max ($1,500,000 retained)
CHI
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Might be a bit of an overpay given he was traded for almost nothing last year but because of the retained salary a 2nd is probably fair
2.
TOR
  1. Gavrikov, Vladislav ($1,400,000 retained)
CBJ
  1. 2023 1st round pick (TOR)
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Probably an overpay, and technically the leafs don’t need a defensemen, but he’s exactly the type of player that would step up in the playoffs

Leafs don't need a LHD, which Gavrikov is. Why did write the following ? "but he’s exactly the type of player that would step up in the playoffs". Certainly his past record shows no proof of that.

I like Gavrikov but we don’t need d in general, and absolutely don’t need a LHD .
Rather spend those assets on an impact 2W or 3C, and Domi isn’t that

That works for the Jackets just fine. Gav's suitability as a Leafs target is a separate discussion and one that I can't really comment well on as I've not paid much close attention to the Leafs lately.

I don’t have a problem with the Chicago trade in value, I actually agree it’s a bit of an overpay… but why focus on what he was traded for last season?

Domi is currently a 2nd line center for a bad CHI team he has 19pts in 26 gp good for 2nd on the team behind Kane who has one more PT. Domi is also leading CHI in Goals with 9

You said" 2w or 3c and Domi isnt that". I understand maybe not liking the player type or something like that. Domi would certainly be a great addition to any playoff teams bottom 6 or top 6 as either a winger or centerman. I would also say that there will be several teams asking about Domi at the TDL, the leafs being one of them. We might be surprised at what the return for Domi will be

I hear you but people forget he was available as a FA just this past summer; he signed with the hawks. Like klingberg, I don’t think top players sign with rebuilding teams unless they have no better options or they get crazy money like Johnny hockey.
I also think, in general, we won’t see crazy prices at this year’s tdl like we have in the past - teams value their picks more b/c of flat cap & 23 draft is deep.
I hope the Leafs are targeting better players than Domi but time will tell

In my humble opinion Domi and his agent probably had several offers from quality teams as a depth FWD with value anywhere from league Minimum to 2 mill. I would say he and his agent decided on Chicago because of the opportunity to play in the top 6 and PP also the 3mill value. Hes taking the opportunity in Chicago and making the most of it and everyday he continues this level of play he is increasing his value as a rental player.

Because he hasn’t changed much as a player over the past year so I expect his value to be somewhat similar. Otherwise it’s tough to predict so early what a players trade value is.

I fully understand why people are saying we don’t need a defensemen, I think we definitely have six NHL caliber defensemen. The problem is that we are missing the Muzzin type of player. Maybe these guys are overrated, but Muzzin has always been one of the leafs best players in the playoffs when he’s somewhat healthy. Also Jordie Benn has actually proved to be a somewhat effective player playing this physical style. Gavrikov plays with playoff snarl and can move the puck and skate much better than Benn. It would be tough to scratch any of the D right now but this is the type of move win now teams make. Also the leafs biggest need on forward is depth scoring. Domi provides exactly that and can play the 2LW or 3C role pretty well.

That’s not unreasonable. I believe there is something to be said about how different GM’s handle trades and their circumstances. In other words what does the forward market look like, how does the acquiring team fit the rental under the cap, and is the GM overplaying their asset? I believe these circumstances could cause a players value to fluctuate year to year. At least the point I’m trying to make is that it’s not always on the player what they are traded for.
