Well can't go from #14 - #3 pick. Only 10 spots up so best they can do if they finish 14th worst is #4 pick. Also Islanders wouldn't consider. They aren't rebuilding and Dobson is a very good player. Maybe another team with RHD to spare like LA. Montreal is probably better off just keeping the puck and drafting the best player possible.

OP, Isles traded for Romanov to play second pairing alongside Dobson so why would they trade him the very next offseason?

It would make zero sense for the Islanders to do this. There's no one in the organization to replace the hole they'd be making here - the only RDs they would have signed for 23-24 would be Ryan Pulock & Grant Hutton, so even if they extend Scott Mayfield they still likely need another RHD to fill out the depth chart. With the rest of their core being on the older side, anyone they pick at 3OA would be less likely to step into the lineup and help immediately, meaning they're going to make their team worse in the near future on the hopes that a non-Bedard/Fantilli prospect pans out.

I dont see any comparables for this trade that would make you think this would ever work. Islanders certainly arent adding a first and whu would they give away Dobson to move up to third in the draft? They arent rebuiding and if they were they'd probably want to hold their best young defenseman

Dobson is one of best young RD in the game. On pace for over 20 goals as a defenseman while playing in all situations. No chance isles do this

This trade is absurd. Even if Montreal and Florida both had top 5 picks and offered them both for Dobson, I think the Isles still say no.
