Bolster 3rd and add vets on D

Created by: nhldeadline2
Team: 2022-23 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 21, 2022
Published: Dec. 22, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Both of these trades might need a bit more from Buffalo as deadline deals.. IDK. If the Sabres are real I think this helps them alot in the short term and also takes some decisions off their hands in 2 years when they need to make choices for 2 and 3 years down the road.

2023-24 cap space: (assuming reported 1 mill increase)
= 6.2 (current post's cap space)
- 5.8 (net when Tage contract kicks in)
- 3.4 (net when Sammy contract kicks in)
+ 6.0 (Okposo contract ends)
+ 2.2 (Girgensons contract ends)
+ 6.1 (Monahan contract ends)
+ 1.7 (Hino contract ends)
+1.5 (Anderson contract end)
+ 4.9 (Bishop contract ends)
+ 3.7 (Cozens/Jost/Asplund RFA contracts end)
+ 1 mill (cap increase)
= 24.1
Notable RFAs
- Cozens (8x$7.5 - high end estimate)
- Jost (2x$2.5 - slightly above qualifying offer)
- Asplund (2x$1.2 - based off Girgensons 2nd deal, minus significant playing time/impact. Aspy gets to fight for his spot with the kids at camp)
Fitzgerald (or Klague. Notable is a stretch, but he's been *Okay* as a fill in, on a minimum 2-way contract fight for 7th D spot with Myers)
= 12.9 before free agents
Notable UFAs
-Okposo (would he sign a 1x$4 AAV?)
-Girgensons (2x$2.5 - 10% raise for vet with mutual love between him and Buffalo)
- Schenn (1x$1 - expirement works, capable partner for OP, worst case solid vet 3rd pair)
- Monahan (wildcard, walks in this scenario)
- Hino (wildcard, happy to bring him back on cheaper deal if he's happy here but walks in this scenario. Hes fine filling in but don't want him in the lineup nightly)
= 4.6 after signing own UFAs

2023 lineup:
FORWARDS
53 - 72 - 89
77 - 24 - 22
71 - 19 - CG
28 - 17 - 21
Depth: kids fight for a spot on the big club
----------------
DEFENSEMEN
23 - 26
25 - Schenn
Edmundson - 46
45 / Myers (note: option to waive for mutual termination? They're fine with the cap but doing him a favor like they did with Bogo)
-----------
GOALIES
Comrie
UPL/Levi fight for backup job
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Mittelstadt, Casey
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (PHI)
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (VGK)
2.
VAN
  1. Bryson, Jacob
  2. Jokiharju, Henri
  3. Olofsson, Victor ($2,375,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Not exactly sure how valuable cap space is to VAN at the moment, but Nucks get a solid mid pair defenseman and a goal scorer along with a solid chunk of cap space.

I may have missed/messed up some of the math on the cap space, so let me know. Going to make '23-24 and '24-25 posts with these same deals to see if it checks out on paper

Maybe you'll get an OR there, but I think getting both of those is too much

I'll take the 1st here in this case. Krebs would be great too but I just like the allure of another 1st and it's something KH has specifically stated he's after for this years draft.

Appreciate the feedback. Depends how the season plays out, but I think I'd be open to it if they continue this run and stay relatively healthy

Whats your counter, or why LOL no? My initial offer was probably off, but included guys I'd be interested in and pieces I'd be open to moving

Yes I saw that and was trying to politely ask you to add something to the conversation - did you think the original offer was fair?

I don't know why we need so many veterans. Add one defenseman and one forward. I am satisfied with Jost and Krebs like ours 3C/4C.

That's fair. I'm only giving up pieces that I don't see being here in 2 years and I'm of the mind to support their young core a bit more.
Mitts or Krebs will be either/or soon enough, or if they both take off they won't be able to afford them with 77/22/25/26
I don't see Olof getting an extension
Joker is solid, but I'd like another physical defender if they look like they have a firmer hold in the playoff race before the TDL

First of all, you laid out the cap projection perfectly and in an easy to understand manner.
Second, it has been three years since the Sabres traded a draft pick for a player. They may start if they think another piece to the puzzle to win the cup, but not to add a player for 20 regular season games.
Third the only player I would add from your list of trades would be Schenn, but I would not trade Jokiharju.
I do not notice him in a game to assess if he is any good, is the best comment about Henri. IMO that makes him a very steady if unspectacular defenseman.
Add a solid RHD physical defenseman, let's keep the picks to throw darts at possible RHD.
We have too many hole to fill, to be a cup contender.
Adding players who will walk at the end of the season for draft picks does not make any sense at the present time.

Completely agree.
Jost is this years Curtis Lazar only better.
Picking up young former first round picks either as a UFA or waiver wire is a smart move IMO.
Krebs seems to play his best hockey with Girgensons and Okposo.
They are excellent forecheckers, keeping the puck out of the defensive zone and frustrating the other team

Habs are gonna get the value of a 1st for both. Casey is fine, but he's not needed
We are probably getting Bourgault + from Edmonton for Edmundson.
And a 1st + from someone for Monahan.
Krebs, Levi, and a 2nd would do the job.

Krebs and Levi are both untouchable. There isn't a player in the MTL franchise that Buffalo would move Levi for in any capacity

Love it. Thanks for taking the time. Can't argue with most of that, but I think these trades make the team better right now, in particular Schenn > Jokiharju.

I semi-agree. I don't think it's a need, but I think both trades make them better now and all players involved won't be here in 2 years, except for maybe Joker. The same argument for why Olofsson would be better on another team - he's very solid and fills a role but they have 3 solid puck movers/defenders in their top 4. Putting some more established beef next to Power would free him up to do his thing and grow the offensive side of his game while the defensive side will take a couple years to get there

I quite like Garland and think he'd still get a solid return if moved. Similarly, I think Schenn will as well at the deadline. If Canucks had interest in Jok I could see this being of interest. My only thought is that they wouldn't have interest in Bryson so I'd think a pick instead. Oloffson would have a nice value for the Canucks to double retain and trade again IMO. It's very intriguing for that and Jok with RFA rights.

I'd probably be of the same mind if I were a Habs fan. Trade seems pretty close to me in a vacuum, but things do get wonky at TDL so I get it. Monahan to a team where they have to retain might increase their leverage too

I threw Bryson in as a body basically since we're taking the Myers cap hit - but, if your point is you have your own guys who can fill the spot that makes sense. Joker can either be a solid mid pair for the Nucks or his trade value should hold on through his contract into RFA. Good point on the double retention on VO, getting a guy scoring at 25+ rate for 1 mill is pretty nice for a contender

For sure, that double retention would be great. Though I'm not sure this FO is that creative. So far it's been underwhelming.... Definitely lots of LHD guys and two, Dermott and Rathbone, who need playing time.
