Replacing Pink

Created by: njlaforte
Team: 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 4, 2023
Published: Jan. 4, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Pionk has been regressing ever since he had a breakout year in his first season with the Jets where he was an elite offensive d man that has aggressive and could shut down some of the top players in the world (McDavid).

With the rise of Ville Heinola over the past 3 games, it seems like he is finally a full-time NHLer. So the Jets have to make a spot for him where he can succeed. The safest way to use Heinola is alongside DeMelo which is where all the Jets young D men have played over the past few years, however, Morrissey plays his best when he is with DeMelo... so the Jets need to find another DeMelo.

The type of player I belive the Jets need is a top 4 RHD/right side D that is an elite shutdown D like DeMelo, but could also add a bit of offence since the Jets would be moving an offensive D in Pionk.

Here are 3 guys that interest me. Might not be super realistic.

  1. Dumba, Matt ($3,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Looking through his advanced stats he has fallen off over the past couple of years, but in all but 2 seasons of his career he has been and elite defensemen when looking at his xG% and corsi. He has also put up the points to back it, with a season where he got 50 points.

He could definitely be had at a discount as it sounds like the Wild have been trying to trade him for a while. With one season left on his deal at 6M he could be retained and it cost only 3M.

It also sounds like he has great leadership and has worn a letter in the WHL and in international play.
MIN
I assume his value is a bit low. I think it is around a 2nd+.
    2.
    WPG
    1. Severson, Damon
    Additional Details:
Severson is currently in a top 4 role with the injury to Marino, however this season he has been playing more of a bottom pair role. Given his contract situation the Devils might not resign him after this season as it looks like they won't have space for him with Nemec and Hughes almost ready for the NHL.

In this deal, I would expect the Devils would want a D man back to fill Severson's spot, or the Jets give them a pick+ and they flip part of the return to get some other D man. Ex. Jets send 2 picks then they send one of the picks to VAN for Schenn.

I think Severson would fit very well in the top 4 either with Morrissey or Heinola. He is a great top 4 two-way guy that could play both PP and PK and play 20ish min a night.
    NJD
I think this deal would cost a 2nd and another piece. Severson is a prairie kid born in Sask. so close to home. He might be open to resigning on a 3-4 year deal in Winnipeg.

My offer for him, depending on if they retain, would be 2024 2nd, 2024 4th, and Stanley . That might be a little low for him but he is a rental.
      3.
      WPG
      1. Chychrun, Jakob
      Additional Details:
This is the dream but I think it could become a reality. Chychrun fits into the Jets window perfectly. His contract is perfect with 2 more years after this year at 4.6M and has no trade protection so he has no say.

He doesn't really fit the mould of the type of player I think we need but any team could use Chychurn. Since his return from injury he has been near point per game as a defenseman on AZ which is crazy. Plus he is very versatile as he can play on the left or right.

This trade would cost a lot and we would have a lot of competition but it would turn or d core from a decent one to one of the best.
      ARI
If I were the Jets I would offer no more than 2 1st and a prospect. The Coyotes could use a winger as they have already drafted what seems to be their 1st and 2nd centers.

My offer would be 2023 1st, 2024 2nd, Pionk, and Torgersson.

          1. Pionk, Neal
          2. Stanley, Logan
          Additional Details:
If the Jets add a D man then Pionk would either have to be included in the deal or shipped elsewhere. Also think they should move Stanley. It hurts our depth but we have guys in the AHL if more then 2 D get injured.M

There's no reason for the Jets to consider any of them. They are playing well and Pionk is likely playing hurt. Teams that are playing as good as the Jets don't make lateral at best trades for the sake of making trades.

Poink is a tough trade because of his contract, unless the Jets take bad similar cap. The three players you proposed trading for....out of reach this season as the teams are in the playoff hunt.

Sevo starts as apart of a package for PLD or a 1st, with the injuries piling up on the back end of just isn’t worth moving a top 4 righty for anything other than a deal that can’t be turned down.
And he iisnt looking for a 3-4 year deal or the Devils would’ve had him locked up over the summer

He may be a rental, but this isn’t a charity case to lowball with, when it’s just as easy for NJ to go the self rental route towards a playoff run

Can’t see Minnesota trading Dumba at 50% for anything short of a 1st round pick.

It will cost you 1st round pick to get dumba, especially at 50 percent retain and prospect. MIn os in playoffs spit and not helping jets

Devils currently 2nd in the metro and are like 95% in nearly every model to make playoffs. Can't imagine Severson goes for that little considering our circumstances unless Nemec and Hughes are like, clearly ready to be impact players this year.

The only thing we know about Severson on his next contract is that he wants term and is willing to give up $$ to get it. So, not sure he would sign 3-4 years when he probably gets 6-7 years elsewhere.
