You are asking the Kings to pay a 2nd to waive a goaltender who has gone 12-2 for the season at as close to the league minimum as you can. I don't see that happening.

Yeah, the deal would be completely dependent on what Copley does between now and the deadline. Personally, I hate being a wet blanket, but I just don't see him holding up through the playoffs - that shiny 12-2-0 record is built on the back of a .904 SV%, which just doesn't seem sustainable. Out of every goalie who's played as many games as Copley (14), that .904 ranks 29th in the league. He's been buoyed by the Kings scoring 52 goals in his 14 starts (3.71 GF), compared to 3.23 in their other 31 games. I think the likelihood that he turns back into a pumpkin is looking pretty strong, unfortunately - but I'd love to be proven wrong, cuz he's a great story.

It's more likely Quick returns to form than Copley leading the team in the playoffs, Quick has had cold streaks before but he has played 92 playoff games and was solid last year. I think the Kings stay pat at goal at the deadline, they have too much money between quick and petersen to keep adding to that pile.

It's tough for me, because what you're saying makes sense, and the Kings have enough youth to be set up well for the next few years...but I also look at the Western Conference this year and see a lot of uncertainty. The Avalanche aren't even in playoff position right now and might take the year off after winning the Cup. Every team that's currently in playoff position has some big red flags - I think LA is in a really strong position to make a run, and if I was Rob Blake I'd be super tempted to cash in some of those young forwards for a veteran or two to close any holes on my roster. Maybe it's not Varly, but I can easily see the Kings being a major player at this year's deadline.

We might be, the Kings window opened a bit prematurely last season, but the front office has stayed somewhat conservative when it comes to purchasing short-term assets. But it won't likely be for goaltending it will be for LD. The Kings are scoring at a pretty impressive rate with Kaliyev and Moore not even in the lineup, so they will have an offensive boost coming for the forward group. At goal you want Quick to return to form (or even Petersen) to take the role from Copley, so you have three options there, I would however look for another AHL goalie who did well with the Kings in Troy Grosenick and it would cost them pennies on the dollar, then you have your choice between 4 goalies (but like I said, you are still banking on Quick to regain control).

The blaring weakness is LD, having Sean Durzi play his offside with Matt Roy and the declining play of Edler, short and long-term the Kings need to address finding that left-shot defenseman. But even then the Kings are winning games against tough teams, they don't need to be buyers because win now teams like Calgary or Edmonton are more desperate and willing to pay amounts the Kings don't need to bite at.

Labanc is playing much better than Beauvillier so it makes zero sense to do this just to upgrade a 5th to a 4th.

Maybe if Beau was a UFA, then the Sharks could flip him for more picks, but honestly they'll get a better return from Labanc

I think that you're right on value for the Kings trade, but as my knowledgeable colleague @tryger says, the fit isn't as good as you perceive it. I don't see us getting any playoff goalie at the deadline. Like him, I'm hoping for at least one major LhD acquisition -- maybe a dark horse like Jake McCabe or Shayne Gostisbehere, if the front office evaluate one of them as worth it.

I read the whole conversation with the Kings fans, I understand both point of view. But LA really need a top 4 LHD, if they do acquire one, it's gonna cost them prime assets. So a top 4 LHD + Varly could be a lot to give for a team who isn't a contender. But again, you pointed out the West have a lot of question mark, so it could be wise to pull the trigger this year. Very interesting
